Re: Poorly Charlie Oh my lord, how dreadful. So glad he didn't swallow it. What an awful experience. I really hope he picks up quickly. I've heard of kids dying from swallowing batteries The stuff in them is horrendous. Edit because I accidentally put in a smiley face instead of a sad face :
Re: Poorly Charlie Thanks all - he is hugely more comfortable now. Stopped drooling and is lying on his back, angling for a tummy rub, wagging his tail. And all batteries are now stored in the cupboards with child proof locks on them. I know I've got the kind of dog that needs to be physically separated from the cupboard and drawers with bleach, toilet cleaner and human drugs in them and installed babydan locks in the kitchen a while ago. Batteries are the only chemicals in the house that weren't stored behind child proof locks. Typical. Just didn't think about them. I know better now.
Re: Poorly Charlie Crimes. You think you've done everything to outwit them, and the little devils still get into mischief, usually expensive. Hope he continues to improve and you get your holiday.
Re: Poorly Charlie I'm glad Charlie is feeling more himself wagging his tail and wanting tummy rubs. Hopefully he will recover quickly,it sounds like he's improved a lot already and you will be able to go on your hols. They know how to put us through it these dogs. :
Re: Poorly Charlie Just home now, first thing to do...check on Charlie! Dearie me,thank goodness he didn't swallow it and that you found it so you could get an idea.... Really hope he picks up quick, you just get on an even keel and then swipe ,there comes the curve ball. Big hug,you will have all got a fright and been really worried x
Re: Poorly Charlie Many thanks. He is sleeping a lot - woke up to have lunch, and a pee and a poo in the garden, came for a cuddle and has now gone back to bed. His tongue is now an alarmingly bright red, which the vet said would happen - I couldn't see anything in his mouth earlier. He can't eat a sea biscuit though. So he said he had to have a bit of cheese reward for peeing and pooing in the garden. : Ok.... One bonus in Charlie's eyes is the wet food. The volume of it is incredible. The tin says he can have 2 tins a day (420g in a tin!). No way, he can have one. But that's still about 400g - 4 times the volume of food he is used to. His eyes popped out of his head when he saw lunch. He couldn't believe his luck! ;D ;D ;D
Re: Poorly Charlie With wet food I think you do generally need to feed a lot more than dry as it has more fillers and obviously more liquid content. As I remember tramadol can make dogs drowsy so this may be why he's sleeping a lot. Glad he seems to be feeling better! Would some ice cubes help to soothe his mouth as well do you think?
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh my - what a scare! Poor boy I hope he recovers quickly and without complications. What is that thing they say about owning a dog helping to lower one's blood pressure??
Re: Poorly Charlie Poor Charlie ;( I hope he gets better quickly. When I was put on Tramadol about 5 years ago I slept a lot for the first week or so. I expect Charlie will be the same. At least the meds will help with the pain. Big hugs to you and tummy rubs to Charlie x
Re: Poorly Charlie Goodness me just caught up with this. Poor Charlie and poor you. This could have been a nasty one without your prompt attention. I'm sure you will watch him like a hawk over the next couple of weeks but any food regurgitation/vomiting and it's an emergency back to the vets in case he ends up with an oesophageal stricture post-burn. Hopefully he felt it burn his mouth and didn't swallow any. Soft stuff only for a while, and although ice cubes may be soothing they are too hard/crunchable for this sort of injury. Poor man. These daft dogs are such a worry.......
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh my word, just caught up with this- how awful! What a worry!! Lots of hugs from us x
Re: Poorly Charlie For sure - luckily I can be with him 24/7 as am on holiday. He won't even be sleeping alone. So that's Charlie made it into the bedrooms forever then. : Rule 6. No, that's right about the ice cubes. Crunching stuff is out. He's not drinking out of his water bowl so I'm on a getting water into him mission. I don't want to use kongs as I don't want him using his tongue to repeatedly lick. So he got wet dog food soup for lunch. Which I have to say he seemed to enjoy greatly. I'm coming round to the idea that full participation in a gundog course next week is looking remote. In particular, I'm not sure I want a dog exercising post cruciate surgery (even if we are heading for the six month mark now) on tramadol in case I can't see any signs of stiffness developing. And whether he will be able to carry a dummy, I don't know (or rather, I suspect nothing will stop him doing so, and it might not be a good thing). I think I will email the organiser, explain, and say my intention right now is to come anyway at least as an observer and perhaps do extra arousal management exercises. Even that will depend on Charlie brightening up from now though.
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh my what a terrible shock! So glad you managed to sort Charlie out, poor lad, he does sounds comfy now, and just a bit chuffed I suspect at the wonderful amounts of food! ;D I do hope he is well enough to go on holiday, if only as an observer so you get to enjoy a good break. I know how important your doggy holidays are. Incidently, I would not even have considered batteries as a hazard, well more to the point a dog wanting to chew them. I have just removed a pack from our kitchen drawers, which I know Benson is now able to open.
Re: Poorly Charlie Just caught up with this - what an awful experience. Thank goodness you realised how serious it was. Do hope he continues to improve.
Re: Poorly Charlie Would crushed ice be ok like you get in a slush puppy so he wouldn't have to chew/crunch it ? Water in with his wet food is a good idea. Wet food also obviously has water in it as well. Usually dogs on wet food don't drink as much as those on dry so he probably won't want to drink as much as normal anyway. It's such a shame about the holiday but at least if you can go as an observer you can pick up lots of tips. Fingers crossed Charlie feels up to it. Loads of tasty wet food and he gets to sleep in the bedroom Charlie might well be thinking not a bad result.
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh yes, I'm used to him tanking his water bowl when he's on kibble. Poor boy, I thought he needed more pee breaks than normal! Tuna flakes sink in water. So I put tuna flakes in water and he has to drink the fishy water to get to the tuna. Works every time. He's probably had much more water than he needs though. :
Re: Poorly Charlie i seemed to remember a post that dogs could not have ice cubes, i coul be wrong , poor charlie hope he is better soon
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh my goodness, I missed this, what an awful day you and Charlie have had! I am so glad he did not need surgery, but what a scare. Everything crossed for you that he mends quickly. I have batteries lying around too. Never gave it a thought.
Re: Poorly Charlie Oh for heaven's sake!!! Charlie!!!! Sorry, Julie, busy day here and just seeing this now! What a panic your poor OH must have had looking for batteries in the house!! Thank goodness he was able to find the evidence and that surgery was avoided. I have to admit that with all the things Simba has eaten I hadn't thought of batteries either...I will have to scour the house. Luckily batteries don't come with a chocolate coating or he'd have found them long before now. I hope you have a good night tonight and that Charlie continues to improve back to his usual bouncy self. I think you all have deserved a nice cuppa (or two) of your favourite beverage....
