Hi first post,i have a 4 and half month old thats not really potty trained, when I got him from family loved labs he was traned to go in litter box so before I got him I took large plastic kennel and took it apart and used the bottom half filled with horse bedding pallets and i don't worry about a thing and it' Been so cold here in iowa I got lazy and just let him do it that way,no worries, but I decided I better try to get him to go out side ,well not going very good he will pee once in awhile but won' poop till he gets inside ,he will just play and try to eatgrass and I get aggravated and give up and bring him back in and first thing he does is go to litter box,I know it' my fault for being lazy but any suggestions would be nice,Thanks in advance,Bob,Cooper is dogs name
You could try using a pen outside. I did this with my puppy because she was more interested in playing in the garden than going to the toilet. So a little pen focussed the mind on the job and then she got to play as a reward for going.
You could also try starting out with the pan outside and once he gets used to that, remove the pan outside. Placing the pan within a pen outside to start off would be good too, then use just the pen.
Yes - litter box outside, in a pen would work. You may need to be vigilant for a while as he gets used to it. We have gravel in our pen, easy to keep clean and they often don’t like weeing in concrete - it splashes their paws. I still every wee with a weak solution of bio gel (the stuff for washing clothes) in a watering can. No smell at all. .
Hi there, our boy is almost 4 months old and thankfully potty training is going well and we hardly have any accidents, but we also found that in the beginning he just wanted to play and mess about in the garden rather than going to the loo. We found our way around this by always taking him out to the garden on his lead, so that each time he was accompanied to the garden and "performed" and received a treat/and or praise, he realised that he was out there to do a specific task. It might help, but good luck with whatever method you try x
Isn't winter in the Midwest fun! We got our last puppy last December. They had trained the litter with wood shavings in a boot tray. Worked quite well. We moved the tray to the back door for a few days, then into the garage and then outside. At temps of 30 - 40 below freezing, being outside long enough for them to do their business is so hard. Now that the weather is bearable it won't take you long. Do you have a good enzyme cleaner for any accidents in the house? Our vet has one called the equalizer that is awesome. Good luck!
