Frequent regular trips to the garden and especially after sleeping, drinking, eating, playing and training and around every 20 minutes or so apart from those. I always take puppies out on a lead to focus on toileting rather than an opportunity to play. If pup doesn't perform in 5 minutes or so take them back in and either pop in their crate, carry them around or watch them like a hawk and try again in 15minutes. If you see pup beginning to squat you can pick up and take outside - just remember to be calm and quiet as you don't want to scare the pup or introduce negative associations of toileting with you in proximity.

We were quite lucky and Jax toilet trained very quickly. But we did have a few accidents. We would take him out as above every 15-20 minutes or so during the day, straight after a sleep. Didn't take him on the lead, although I think thats a great idea. Also for getting used to the collar. We noticed very early that he tended to poo after a meal, so we would feed him and straight out and the majority of the time, that worked. The only time we would normally have accidents is if we strayed from the trips outside and left him indoors too long. In the night, I would take him out about 22:30 and then get up again at about 02:00, then about 06:00. Fortunately we only had to do this for a few weeks.

e needs to go out: after sleeping, before play, after play, during play if he's sniffing, within 5 minutes of eating, immediately after drinking and every hour otherwise. He needs to get a treat everytime he pees or poos outside immediately when he is done, along with a good potty comment. At night during the first week I got him up at 3:30 after going to bed at 11 PM. I gradually extended it to 6:00 am in 1/4 hr increments. At 12 weeks we upgraded his food to a high rated puppy food and he started sleeping for 8 hours right away.
