Re: Problems with heel walking on lead We had a much longer walk around town today - about 20 minutes worth (just on my own with Bob) and he did really well. I think I'm going to avoid lead walking when I've got my little boy with me for a while... we'll just jump into the car and take them both out somewhere else for a run around. When people were coming up to us, I basically ignored them and made Bob do a nice sit for a treat. He was too busy watching me to really bother about the people which was good. Bob is also sitting automatically now when we get to the curb side and before we cross a road. I really feel good progress is being made now. Lou x
Re: Problems with heel walking on lead Good to hear, Lou, and well done, young Roberto! Sounds like you have it all under control
Re: Problems with heel walking on lead
Good to hear, Lou, and well done, young Roberto! Sounds like you have it all under control
Ha ha LOVE the name Roberto lol! I actually had to pop into the vets just now for more worming medicine so took another lead walk into town with my little boy. I think Bob loves Arthur so much, he is always watching where he is.. He pulled when Arthur ran off ahead of us and if Arthur lagged behind, he'd stop and turn round.. but I stuck to the training schedule and we followed on behind slowly. We stopped on the way back and went into a little enclosed park area by the river (dogs not allowed) so I had to tie Bob up to the railings. He HATES it when I tie him up and we go off without him. And he barked and whined quite a bit. But when he was quiet I'd go back over and say YES and give him a treat. I even asked a couple walking past if they could please ignore him when he was barking as we don't reward barking with any sort of interaction. And they happily obliged. He then settled and got a couple more treats for being quiet. Just going to take him up to the gallops for a proper run now. He's done 2 little lead walking exercises today but hasn't really had a proper run. Lou x
Re: Problems with heel walking on lead Wanting to be with Arthur sounds exactly like what I had (and still have to a lesser extent) with my two. Just keep at it with consistency and you'll get there in the end. Well done!
Re: Problems with heel walking on lead Mira has recently begun to pull again on some walks, usually less familiar (therefore much more interesting) walks or popular routes where she knows there will be a big off-lead run around. So she is back to Loose Lead Walking Boot Camp! We do lead-only walks some days - longer than usual so she gets plenty of exercise. She gets small rewards for a loose lead, but she never gets the reward of being let off to free run so she starts to realise there is no benefit to pulling. (She had learnt this but seems to have forgotten, plus OH can be a bit lax at enforcing : ) Other times we drive to places where she can be off lead from the minute she's out of the car. She is getting the message.....
