We just adopted a yellow and we are looking at different training. What are your thoughts on e collars? We are active military and have found a prior military dog trainer who uses these collars. Our eventual goal for our dog is a therapy dog for military hospitals and a family pet as well. Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

The forum ethos is centred around positive reinforcement training methods, thus aversive methods such as e-collars are not recommended. Notwithstanding the fact that in many EU countries, the use of e-collars is not permitted.

The stance and evidence is detailed here - UK Kennel club.

Other countries where e-collars have been banned in training are Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

Hello from Canada our puppy is 2 end of may. He is 120 pounds.. He is a handfull of sheer joy. However we live in an area where there are no parks fences anything just wide open beaches and forest. His recal is not going well. We have done the rope training but its difficult when we are with a group of dogs playing . Long story we are considering an e collar as our dog sitter and friends all use and love them. I was looking for help with finding a good one.

There is absolutely no need to use an ecollar for recall training. Read the above links for more detail. Buy Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson and a long line. If I can do it with my crazy untrained rescue then anyone can!

    Hi,

Please don’t consider using an e collar, have a look at the post from @Beanwood above and also @Ruth Buckley’s post. There are ways to train a dog’s recall without using pain. It takes practice and patience but far better that than an e collar.
