Um, sorry to pick you up on this, but this surprised me as Pippa isn't in the habit of recommending the use of aversive methods, so I looked at the article. She says: "An aversive is something the dog does not like and will try hard to avoid. A fierce telling off (grrr you BAD dog) is an example of an aversive, a squirt of water is another." This isn't a recommendation to squirt water, it's a description of what an aversive is. She goes on to say (emphasis mine) : "Bear in mind, if you decide to use aversives at 3 in the morning, that the aversive has to upset the dog in order to work, and these days, many of us now longer wish to use aversives on our canine friends." I don't think it's necessary here to get into the debate about whether a squirt of water is the end of the world or not, I just felt it should be stated that Pippa is not advocating using aversives.
