Welcome to the forum, sorry you are having such a horrible time at the moment. I hope Boston is back on top form again soon.

I love the name, btw - my daughter lives in Boston, USA!

Thanks for all your kind messages about Boston, I'm sorry I don't have more time to come on the forum at present as its so useful!

I can't believe it but Boston is sick AGAIN, a week after coming off his antibiotics for the gastroenteritis, he has explosive diarrhoea and vomiting today. Struggling to get him to take on water now :(

The vet said starve him for 12 hours and then see how he is, I find it hard not to worry when he won't drink.

I can't think what is causing it this time, I have been watching him like a hawk since he was poorly before and he hasn't had anything to my knowledge that should make him sick.

Does anyone have any tips for getting fluids into them? I have asked my mother for a syringe from her surgery so perhaps I can put some water down his throat but it seems harsh.

Oh poor pup , and you too . if you cook some rice , cool it but leave it very watery , this will help with the fluids, and yes a syringe is good , it does sound drastic but at times drastic measures need to be taken , I really hope Boston will be recovering soon , good luck x

Sorry to hear this, i do hope things get better soon.

Providing you think it's ok with his tum, you could try slightly flavoured water - diluted water from a tin of tuna in brine for example or unsalted stock. Or perhaps you could crush up an ice cube, he might be happy to lick/chew the bits of ice. Interesting things (bits of carrot, say) in his water bowl might also help.

We've used stock or milk when our dogs have not wanted to drink.

So worry that Boston is unwell again :(

Thank you I will try the rice later if he stops with the D+V. I can't believe how much can come out of a puppy :-[
I just offered him so ice (usually his favourite) but he wasn't even interested in that. Perhaps I'll try the flavoured water too.
Such a shame it's so hot! He's sleeping in between the episodes so just trying to keep him cool.
Thanks everyone, it's so nice to have advice!

In this heat if he continues not to drink I would call my vet back too and let them know.

    Good luck!

I just managed to get him to have some water with a bit of milk in, as soon as he saw me pour something in it he got interested, so I just hope he keeps it down/in now. I have a frozen bowl in the fridge so I'll see if he's interested in that later. Dumb question but i've only ever frozen wet food in kongs, so how could I get liquid in there without it pouring through! would like to try this as he loves frozen kongs so would be good to get him interested in one later. Thank you!

Using kibble you can make frozen Kongs really sloppy. I stand mine up in a ramekin in the freezer, a little leaks out at first but it just sits in the bottom of the ramekin.

    Hope he perks up soon.

I hope Boston has kept the water down and is feeling better. :-\

My old vet always told me to give my old lab, who had very frequent upset stomachs, a cup of tea. Spot of milk, bit of sugar if you want and let it go cold obviously. There apparently is something in tea that's good for the stomach. Murphy loved it. ;D

Also as Kate suggested cooked rice but very watery. I don't know how you cook rice but if you do 2 parts water to 1 part rice and let the rice absorb all the water that is good for the stomach as well.

Fingers crossed he is better very soon.

    Poor Boston ;(
The rice suggestion is really good. It always helped Harley when she had tummy problems. As for the kong, you can always put a teaspoon of natural yoghurt with the rice, stuff the kong and freeze it. Harley loves these :)
I hope he gets better soon x

I freeze flavoured water in kongs - I use a big bulldog clip to keep the bottom hole closed (but that's no good to you right now unless you happen to have a big bulldog clip hanging around :) )

Kibble can absorb a fair bit of water if you soak it.

I hope your boy picks up soon.
