Hiya, My puppy is 14 weeks old and although her recall is pretty good already she tends to run up to dogs or people when in our local park. How do I discourage her from doing this because some of the dogs that walk on the field are reactive and yesterday she ran over to a toddler passing by and jumped up which startled the child.
Hi and welcome to the forum . As a pup, Harley used to do this a lot! I worked and worked on her recall to ensure she came back as soon as I called her......I done this by having high value treats and every time she looked at me on a walk, I rewarded her. If I seen a dog or person in the vicinity I would quickly get her attention and do some training such as sit, wait, follow me. I also would run in the opposite direction to her and she very quickly started watching me closer. Another thing i done was to have her on a lead and harness and sat on the bench watching people and dogs go past. If she paid attention to me she got rewarded, if she reacted in would get her to sit again and start over. I also sat outside the local shopping centre and done the same. It really helped being consistent and really proofing the recall in all situations. I now have a dog who will ignore 99% of people and dogs unless I say 'go in then' to which she will go and say hi. A long line might help too if you are unsure if she will respond to you before reaching the other people/dog
