Hi all my nearly 7 month lab has still been weeing in the house , mainly my room where we stay in the evening and sleep . he started going to the loo on walks at around 4 months (mainly poos , and very rarely wees) but for the past few weeks he has stopped going on the walks , i know he is distracted a lot and can be difficult , but even when he will do commands like sit , high five etc, when i tell him to wee i get nothing on occasions he might just go out the blue but thats rare. he knows the command as we practiced for a long time when we had him , and would do it on command in the garden, even going to the door or whining when he wants to go. i have tried back to basics and always praise the command and offer treats after in the garden and on walks ( he gets lots of treats and praise if he does it on walks !) i have tried longer walks, playtime before walks but he would rather burst and leak than go to a different spot. i tried a different spot in the garden with treats / bowl of food to encourage, even first thing in the morning and he doesn't want to know . the past few nights he has waited until we come home form a walk to wee going up the stairs or weed in his bed, ( he has done that a few times in his bed now) which is frustration after spending so long telling wee wee , just to get a blank stare and this morning he had weed in my bedroom - which he hasnt done for a long time - but he hasn't even been letting me know he wants to go either latley . i dont know if i am confusing him or not , all im trying is to encourage toilet on walks and trying different spots in the garden ( which he will do at times but nothing others) he is upto 2 walks a day latest around 10 pm when he does want to go (usually )- if i try him on a walk or different spot he wont go unless he goes to his spot in garden ! any advice greatly appreciated
Hi Rob Sounds a bit strange. May be worth having a chat with the vet just to rule out a uti but doesn't sound typical. Once he has wee'ed inside are you using an ammonia-free cleaner to remove the smell? Just a small thing but worth thinking about. I guess going back to basic potty training as if he were a puppy would be the next suggestion. Tedious, but might be necessary.
Hi, thanks for the reply i havent used the ammonia-free cleaner, as it wasnt as if he was sniffing it out after to go again in the same area , it has just been a few odd occasions , but its something to bear in mind will get him to the vets soon too. back to basics sound the best which we have been doing, hes been great today , went on the walk and different spot in the garden ! just cant work out why there seem to be a hurdle stopping going more often on walks? may just need time i suppose , would you know roughly what age dogs start having regular wees on the old lampposts and things? appreciate all are different , im just curious
I think Lilly was a bit older before she started the "marking" peeing. Maybe around 2? Bit of a guess on that one my memory is rubbish. Glad you've had a better day.
Try a puppy mat and try moving the mat to nearer a door, where if he has to go you'd prefer he went. (They are supposed to be scented with chemicals to encourage the dog to use that) Our 5 mth old, has just pooped under the kitchen table, having been let out into the back garden to do that same thing....annoying, but i have a puppy mat under the table, just in case...(but he's not used it for a while now...) I would also restrict where your dog can roam, so he doesnt get access to your bedroom for example. We have been suffering from soft poop forever....seems like frozen and raw carrots as toys/snacks have helped at last..
Hi , hes been off the mats for while now about 2 months i think , im not sure if that would be going backwards? and sending a message that its ok to go in the house He was ok for a few days, then just had a good walk tonight, a good poo on command - i tried for a wee 2 for 2 and no joy, he decided to wait unit we had gone upstairs to have a wee in his bed as soon as he got in ! very strange why hes doing this lately
