Hi, just signed up, glad to be here! We got a new choc lab 8 weeks old last Friday. I have a combo of crate and play pen set up, he's been great in the crate in the night (I take him out to the backyard to potty once or twice during the night) but during the day when he is in the play pen, he will not use the potty in there. The play pen is not huge, there is some floor space but not too much and he just relieves himself there. The potty is a dog litter with soil from our backyard and it's the farthest from the crate. When I take him out to the backyard he usually goes on the grass or soil. Not sure how to encourage him that in the play pen he NEEDS to use the litter. Any suggestions? Thanks much! Nir
Hi Nir, Is there a reason why your puppy has to toilet in the pen? Why are then not being taken outside to the garden for this? He will be used to going outside and thats when he will receive his praise or treat. He will be holding it for as long as he can and just toilet when he can't anymore.
The places I read about setting up a play pen all recommended a potty in the pen. It is not absolutely necessary TBH because we are taking him out plenty but I also thought it's gonna help with training.
I would not want to train him to use a litter box in the house. It seems to me that it will make it harder to have him reliably house trained.
Ok, yeah, I took it out. Thanks both for the replies. Ski-patroller, Ollie looks so much like you profile pic
