We have a 13 week old puppy that we brought home when he was 8 weeks. I started out by taking the puppy outside every hour and making a big deal when he goes, giving him treats and praise. The problem is he goes like every 15 minutes. Many times I will bring him in from a walk and he will have an accident inside within 5 minutes. I thought it would get easier as he grew, but it doesn't seem to be changing in the 5 weeks we've had him. If he is crated he can hold it for a couple hours (I haven't crated him longer than that). For now he is sleeping the night in a play pen with big washable pee pad. Does it get better when he is older or am I condoning bad behavior that will continue? Do you guys have any tips?
You need to be taking your pup out every 20 mins, after a sleep and after playing. At 13 weeks old he is still very immature. My recent pup was about 16 weeks before she showed signs of being able to go longer. Now at 5 months I can trust her for a couple of hours.
Hi - I agree with above. Also, I’ve had good success with training my dogs to use potty bells. You can find them online and they come with instructions or just google. They do take consistency and patience because your pup will find it all a big game at first and ring the bells for fun and it IS annoying. But that stage doesn’t last long. I take the bells with me when we go stay at my sister’s house and just show Lucy where they are and she’s all set. Also, make sure you are cleaning up all messes with an enzymatic cleaner to remove all odor. Good luck!
I feel your pain. My last 2 labs didn't have to go this much but to be fair I got them 2 weeks later. This pup is 8 wks. He goes so often. I try to catch him, the sniff, the circle, etc but sometimes he is playing with a toy, comes off his bed and pees. No warning. He went out 30 min ago. Other times he goes hours. This will be a memory one day. ; )
