Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? 5 months old and even better!! (Apart from some bouts of hosepipe diarrhoea) Amber has finally learnt to relax in the lounge with us. So now she will curl up next to me on the sofa and watch tv in the evening rather than needing a nap in her crate at some point. I think my nice dog sitter and her two labs have taught Amber this . Teething wise, nearly all adult teeth in just waiting on canines and a couple of others. Biting is getting more cheeky than persistent. I don't feel under constant guard against being bitten but she has nipped me a few times while her dinner is soaking presumably in an attempt to get fed quicker, needless to say this resulted in a time out not getting fed. Still great out and about meeting people/dogs and walking, recall suffering slightly when there is bird poo to be eaten (must be some physiological deafness!! ;-)) and she has head-butted a few new human friends with her bouncy greeting. Next job is to teach greeting with all 4 feet on the ground. As for the diarrhoea, she seems ok in herself but it's been bad for 24 hours now. I am a vet so monitoring her myself. Am currently phasing out lunch so wondering if she can't handle the increase in size of her other two meals. Will decrease quantity at meals today and see how she is, if not then maybe some medical action tomorrow. She's now just under 16kg and still lean like I'm aiming for (a little bit of rib visible at times and a nice waist). Loving my first puppy so much, I had mean parents who never let me have a dog as a child so now I'm a new grad vet with a house and about to start work I've taken the leap!!
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? That all sounds super! Except for the diarrhoea, of courseā¦
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? All sounds really good Until Harley was 10 months old I had her on 3 meals a day as her tummy couldn't take the increase. Only in the past 2 months have I been able to change her to 2 meals
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Sounds good. only one dog? Can't be a "proper" vet Think we need an updated pic of your girlie
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Going well!!! Agree - you should have a hall full, like Siegfried Farnon
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? I'm working on a menagerie but my boyfriend isn't keen. Amber's breeder bred a litter or working sprockers and offered me one free to be Amber's friend but I wasn't allowed . Diarrhoea cleared up, scrambled egg, rest and probiotic worked. Firm poo yesterday and will start introducing her own food back in gradually today and tomorrow. I'll sort out some pictures today for you .

Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Haha, unfortunately he bought Amber so I'd lose both of them, which would be a shame as I quite like the pair of them!! Yes the breeder is lovely, she's my good friend's mum and has 17 dogs (mostly working gundogs but a few less useful things like a Bassett Hound and a Daxie) and has a couple of litters a year. Amber is going back there when we go on holiday, she might not want to come back to our house without her friends. Here are some pics (hope they work - I struggled a bit last time). https://www.dropbox.com/s/tq7bd9pb5e2wwxv/photo (37).JPG https://www.dropbox.com/s/6dfpx83ilyau1q2/photo (36).JPG https://www.dropbox.com/s/ihk3gl5a3m59oa1/DSC00450.JPG https://www.dropbox.com/s/239pxpi4a58hbk6/DSC00445.JPG https://www.dropbox.com/s/dq4je746x0s3wsw/DSC00031.JPG
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? A very beautiful and elegant dog. One thing however, do not swim a dog with a harness, collar or long line on as they can get caught up with hidden things in the water :'(
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Oh god, I've never heard that before about collars and harnesses (am worrying now), but she's never on a long line or lead though. I'd just be a bit concerned if I needed to go in and grab her out I'd have nothing to get hold of or if she was collar-less and ran off/got spooked (heaven forbid) then she'd take longer to be reunited with me? All the places she swims I'd be able to go and rescue her though if needs be. Thanks for making me think about the issue, will take it on board
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Dogs usually stay with their owners when near water as it is such fun! Worse though if your dog gets caught under the water by her collar or harness and drowns before you can get out to her!
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Aw...she is lovely. Guess Amber and OH are a package then Where did you graduate from? My daughter is an aspiring vet. Got a way to go yet though she is only 15. Only realistically Glasgow and Edinburgh, so not many places to get a chance with, and yet to see her under exam pressure The idea of SEVENTEEN DOGS - yeeesh! Bit many
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? She's a good puppy apart from when she's chewing my arms off! I graduated from Liverpool this summer and could not recommend it highly enough. I've had an amazing 5 years. Some friends went to Edinburgh and loved it. I only have a few more weeks off enjoying the sunshine with my puppy before I start work . Making the most of it. Also planning for puppy, I'm going to work shifts so one week in three I'm out for the day but OH works from home at least one day a week and his mum (Amber's nan!!) is going to be a puppy lunchtime playmate when we both are out to work for the whole day.
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Sounds good Alex. Just noticed your tag-line ;D ;D Being in Scotland, we don't pay fees, so opting by choice or necessity for an English Uni, for whatever subject, involves considerable extra costs. Would take a lot of thought. I have heard good things of Liverpool Best of luck for starting your job!
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? She is gorgeous Good luck with your job....very rewarding career
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? My chocolate lab Blue has hit the 3 month mark and has turned into a biting machine! I have ripped clothes, bite marks all over my arms and legs, and a puppy that just can't seem to lick me instead of biting now. Ive tried everything but he seems to only get more overexcited and lunges at me more. Help!! He has lots of toys but seems only interested in them for a short while before coming after me. What do I do?
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Willow (13 weeks) can bite hard still when she's overexcited. She knows only to mouth when she's in a normal state of mind. If she does go in too hard, I yelp (high pitched but not so loud that it scares her) and stand up immediately with my arms crossed, not looking at her. After a few days of this, she doesn't even bother to jump up at me now, she knows that I'm not playing and either wanders off or settles down immediately. I then play with her again and she's always really gentle. When she was so over-excited (normally when over-tired) that she couldn't contain herself, I'd just pop her in her crate for a few minutes to calm down before letting her out again. I wouldn't say anything cross, just put her in there and say "calm down, Willow". Sometimes, just a little yelp when she's getting to the limit is enough to make her calm down. She doesn't want the game to end!
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? littleboybluesmomma, our black lab Hamilton (9 1/2 weeks) is an absolute biting machine! Thanks to this forum and everyone's amazing advice on biting and their techniques, it is (slowly) getting better. When he gets riled up and opens his mouth to bite, we shove something in it like a bone or stuffed toy and he usually keeps playing with that thing. When he nips at my feet I have been doing the "timeout" method. As soon as he starts I say "No!" And if he bites again I say "Hamilton, no! Timeout!" If he bites again he gets a timeout. And now he is realizing timeout means I will pick him up and put him in his designated timeout room and shut the door for about a minute. When I say "Hamilton, no! Timeout!" now, he looks at me and barks and will lick me a bit and find something else to do. I have also done the yelping method, but that's not working very well anymore The worst thing is that he will chew on everything he's not supposed to, but refuses to chew on the 15 toys he's allowed to chew on. Go figure. He likes to drag our 3 foot runner rug around the house when we're not looking.
Re: Puppy problems - will things EVER improve??? Hamilton sounds like a little darling! Rolo is exactly the same, my daughter counted Rolo's toys the other day, 22 toys! What does he prefer? the washing machine detergent cup, a plastic bottle and everything else he's not supposed to have.
