I have a 9 week puppy who has started to refuse his food (he is on skinners puppy food which the breeder gave them). We have had him since Thursday and he ate fine until yesterday, he cries at the bowl and lays next to it and yesterday ate it after a little while but today he did not want it and cried at it then went off. I fed him some by hand and he would eat that but not interested in feeding himself. He is keen to eat the cats food if I don't get there first ! I have been giving him chicken as a treat when practising sit etc do you think this has affected his appetite? Apart from this he is a very Happy healthy boy. Any advice greatly received.
I would phone your vet and ask for their advice if it was my puppy. He is very young. Hope he is soon better.
I took him to the vet yesterday as he had been scratching and he said he may have a skin infection and gave antibiotics. He gave him a puppy check over at the same time and said He was fine. Said to keep an eye on eating ... i was not too happy with answer so wondered what other people thought. Ta
Sometimes when puppies leave home and they don't have to compete with their litter mates, they don't have such a good appetite. Maybe you are feeding him too much and he is full up? However, not eating is usually a sign that all is not well, if he continues not to eat then I would be back at the vet.
Hi, I would call the breeder - maybe she soaked the food first, or did something different. Worth checking at any rate. Hope your little chap gets his appetite back soon.
Thanks for your replies we were already soaking the food as the breeder did. Think the problem was we were feeding him too much (as mentioned above) as well as treats when training so cut back slightly and he eats his food happily again. This was a shock for me as I had a lab before and he was never full up lol! Thanks.
Glad to hear he's eating happily again. We maeasured out Homer's daily amount of food, divided this between his meals keeping some back for treats and to stuff his Kongs. Hope to see some pictures of your pup.
I’m also having trouble with my puppy eating, she is 8 weeks old and on dr johns puppy which I was given by the breeder. She will not eat it, but she loves the science plan canned food so I use some and add water to make a broth and add it to her normal food. It makes a difference but i’m Thinking of moving her onto something she will like more and more protein for her x
