Hello all! our beautiful boy Mylo is 7 months old and an absolute delight!! Since we adopted him at age 3 months, he has been crate trained to sleep. However, we would put him in his crate when we’d leave for the gym and the howling/barking that would come from Mylo was bonkers! so, we decided to let him roam in the living room when we’d leave at around 5.5 months and he’s had no accidents or messed around with anything. the barking/howling was less as compared to when he was crated, but I really wish he would stop. We give him a treat (bully stick, complicated puzzle etc) every time we leave and a treat when we get back..but it’s been nearly 2 months and no further progress. I should add, any time either just my husband or I leave the home..Mylo will stand by the door and whine, despite one of us still being with him any suggestions on how to stop this are welcome
Hi, we have had problems with separation anxiety with our girl and i would strongly recommend you have one to one training with a good behaviourist if you can Our trainer came to our home and observed Isla and questioned us on all sorts of things that we didn't even realise were making things worse for her. We discussed several ideas and drew up a plan to help with her anxieties. Following it was hard but we did to help Isla and it's a work in progress. It's really complicated when you look into separation issues and I'm pleased we got help. Good luck
we have the exact same thing with Kyko doesn't seem to get any better. Our solution is to not leave him alone . Doesn't help things though & is a pain when we HAVE to do things as we need to arrange someone to sit with him or pay for day care. We do leave him for around an hour once a week while we nip to the shop. We have a camera on him & it shows he will finish his kong or licky mat which we have left for him , then go and sit at the front door and bark for maybe 5 minutes, then he will sit, or lie in front of the door till we return. Sometimes he will bark on and off & sometimes he doesn't but he is nowhere near relaxed enough to go to sleep or play with toys
We have been lucky I guess. None of our dogs seem to be (have been) upset when we left them alone. Cooper is a velcro dog sometimes when we are around, but other times she goes to a quite place and goes to sleep. I wish I could say that I trained them to behave this way, but it is mostly just how they always behaved. We are pretty much permanent dog sitters for one of our friends Samoyeds. Both dogs just sleep most of the time, but they interact with each other mostly when we are there to see it. If I walk downstairs to my office, both dogs will run down the stairs and ask me to open the slider to the back yard. When I do Cooper runs out the door, jumps off the deck and dashes once around the yard. The Sammie follows more slowly (Sammies are energy con-servers) The funny thing is that they have dog door to the back yard and can go out any time they want. If they go out on their own they usually walk out quietly, but if I open the door it is a race.
