Hi, Im new here. I get my first Labrador puppy next Sunday, an eight week old chunky chocolate boy. He has all his health checks, hips eyes and elbows, good scores, but he hasn't been vaccinated. I intend to get this done myself. What I wanted to know is, is it safe to go and pick him up, and bring him back on the train, crossing London on the underground, ( travelling from Essex to West Sussex) I intend to carry him most of the time we are not on the train, wrapped in a blanket. Will he be alright, as he has not been vaccinated ? Cant wait to get him, really looking forward to meeting him.
Re: Puppy vaccinations, safety I think that will be fine Just keep him off the ground (even off the floor of the train). The train journey might be a little scary because of all the noises and the things flashing past. Keep him on your lap and stroke and speak to him if he is nice and calm. Make sure you act nice and calm too. It might be worth taking a cat carrier along in case you need to confine him a bit (people will be wanting to pat him and he may find it a bit overwhelming - a cat carrier could be a safe haven). I would definitely take someone with you to be your 'hands' (get you through the ticket barrier etc.) as you will be fully occupied with the puppy. And.....welcome to the site and to Labrador ownership!!!! It's so exciting to be getting a new puppy
Re: Puppy vaccinations, safety How exciting Maggie,I've just joined the world of lab ownership and it brings so much pleasure, they are lovely.i missed that lovely cute ,plump puppy stage because my pup was 5 months old when we got him.we had to import him to Dubai so he had to be4 months to travel so he had a bit if a journey to get home just like your little fella.I would definitely think about some kind of pet carrier just to be in the safe side, they can be really wriggly an he will be strong even though he is so small. Let us know how you get on and send pictures when you can Good luck
Re: Puppy vaccinations, safety Hi there and welcome to the forum. There is some really good advice in the previous posts just wanted to add that you will have to be prepared for puppy to get a touch of "dire rear" during the journey so a supply of wet wipes could come in handy. You could also give your vet a ring and check if there is anything else you should be aware of. When you say the he has all his health checks including hips and elbows, do you mean his parents have been scored? Good luck with your new pup! ;D
Re: Puppy vaccinations, safety welcome magie, good advice, i would ask the breeder not to feed him before your journey, good luck
Re: Puppy vaccinations, safety Hi, Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone. So excited about getting the pup, going to call him Otis. Nearly bought a pet carrier for him, but couldn't find one large enough, the lady in the shop said he wouldn't be able to turn around in the one I was thinking of. Will ask the owner not to to feed him beforehand. Yes, its the parents who have been hip eye and elbow tested. Nearly bought a pup who didn't come with health checks, then read more and wized up. Thanks again, Maggie.
Re: Puppy vaccinations, safety Thats good to hear Maggie , it can save lots of heartache at a later stage , look forward to hearing about Otis, love the name
