Hi, Our puppy arrived on the 2nd Jan he was 7 weeks old. I have gradually changed his food to James Wellbeloved (White fish & rice) kibble. He was at the vet last Sunday for his first injection and was wormed on Monday. He has had diarrhoea since we got him, he's beginning to learn to toilet outside on the back garden which is slabbed. There are red berries lying around which we try to keep clear but I'm not sure if he still finds and eats them. Any advice on how we can treat this condition ??
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Congratulations on getting your pup. What is his name? Have you got any pics? I would suggest feeding him boiled rice and chicken for a few days to try and help settle his tummy. If it doesn't settle after a few days I would take him to the vets. Hope he gets over this soon
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea A pup that age with diarrhoea that has been going on for so many days, I would want to chat through with the vet. Moving to his new home can cause diarrhoea, as can the car ride to get there! Again the change in food can unsettle his tum, as could the berries... It is possible to 'starve' him for twelve hours before starting feeding again (this was certainly the advice in line with the breeder of my pup), but as pups can dehydrate and deteriorate quickly, I would want to check it out with the vet. Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Check up with the vet would the first port of call. Check the amount of food you feeding, sometimes too much food can cause diarrhoea. The manufacturers guidelines can get you to feed too much? They want you to buy more LOL. A bland diet for a few days will help, try adding some Pro-biotic yogurt to the food helps replace flora in the gut.
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea We have had the same problem with our Nero. Feeding chicken and rice only for a week seemed to help but as we are introducing his puppy food back into his diet he still gets soft stools now and again. Try the chicken and rice and see how you get on. The main thing is to make sure he is drinking water to keep hydrated. Is he ok in himself? If he is lethargic at all or doesn't seem himself get to a vet asap
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Welcome, and not much to add to the good advice already given. Definitely a chat with the vet on Monday!
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Hi there! Welcome to the forum. Chicken and rice would be a good move to start with. Plain boiled rice no salt I normally slice a chicken breast into the pot ank cook it all in one (lazy version). Make it overcooked so nice and wet and add extra water to get more fluids in. But I Agree to chat with your vet on monday. Jac
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Thanks for all the info re Bailey, he's actually pretty lively, eating & drinking well and loves playing with his toys, still only 8 weeks so you've got to expect the mistakes. Best thing I bought was a cage where he happily sleeps all night and as we leave the door open during the day he uses it regularly for a nap also keeps him safe when you have to go out. Will visit the vet next week for advice. Tried to send photo but site wouldn't allow !!
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Hi, We took Bailey to the vet as advised mainly due to seeing blood in his diarrhoea, looks like he has Giardia so he's getting treatment and at the moment we are feeding him on rice & chicken, still got diarrhoea but the vets not overly concerned as he's still lively, has put on weight and not dehydrated, having to get up every 2 hours to take him out but hopefully things will improve, only another 3 weeks before he starts going out...can't wait !!
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea I hope the meds help him quickly, poor pup :'( The time will go quickly til you can take him out
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Glad the vet has got a cause - he will be feeling better in no time. Its so exhausting getting up so ofter overnight though. Hope you are able to share the burden. Poor wee chap.
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Sorry your pup has been poorly,my Dexter had giardia at 6 months....it took 2 courses of antibiotics and they made him loose too but after that he was clear x
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Glad you know what the problem is and have the appropriate meds... Onwards and upwards from here!
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Pleased to hear that all is going well , eyes in the back of head comes to mind with pups , he will soon be back to normal
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Hi and welcome from here too! Glad you found the cause, I'm sure he'll be as right as rain soon. Hope you can get the pics sorted out, we'd love to see him!!!
Re: Puppy with Diarrhoea Hi, just giving an update on Bailey. The medication appears to have worked, diarrhoea appears to have ran its course and no more blood. He's now getting pretty switched on with his toilet training and actually pretends to toilet outside just to get more treats. He's getting bigger and more lively but sleeps through the night in his cage without disturbing anyone, only another 16 days before he can walk outside...but who's counting!!!!
