Our puppy had an ear infection caused by yeast about a month and a half ago. The vet gave us ear drops to do for 10 days which helped but about a week later her ears, especially the right one were bothering her and sure enough... either another ear infection or just the first one that didn’t clear all the way. So we were told to use the same drops again, this time for 14 days. Sunday was the last day and now already her right ear is bloodied from her scratching it. What gives? Are ear infections hard to clear? I read labs can be more prone to them, but this much? Should I maybe get a second opinion?
Tilly has had them of and on all her life. It may be caused by an alergic reaction to something in the food. We do a lot of ear cleaning and also ear meds. Cooper and Ginger's ears did not lay as flat on the side of their head. Maybe they got better ventilation, but in any event they never had ear infections. Did your vet do a culture? Some times Tilly's are a combination of yeast and bacteria. They need different meds.
Yes, the vet did swab bith Times and in both ears and just said yeast was the cause. Maybe it’s the food. She was having runny poo problems ever since we got her so we switched to a different brand. It got better, but still slightly runny so we have a third brand we are slowly switching over to now. The protein in all of them is chicken, though, so maybe she’s sensitive.
Hi @LKRG dog with non-pricked ears are more prone to ear infections. It's harder for the ear to dry out, particularly if your dog does a lot of swimming.
I use the product Aveno for ear cleaning it helps a lot. I try to clean his ears as much as I can to prevent buildup.
Are you in the UK? If so I would highly recommend Thornit powder: http://www.thornitearpowder.com Commonly used by loads of doggie folk everywhere, and fixing ear infections I would never be without a pot in the first aid box and it's fixed every ear problem we've ever had, with all our dogs.
