What a good looking dog she was at 2. I am sure that with love and affection rather than food you will restore her to her former glory

She will be so much happier when she isn't lugging all that fat around. You will take years off her as you take the pounds off her.

    The very best of luck.

Hey all. We met Lexy. She is the sweetest dog. But we couldn't take her. She must weigh 75-80 lbs. My son was very intimidated by her :( Do you all think I'm rotten? I feel SO bad for her. The poor thing must be so tired with the extra weight on her. Her whole back end wobbles as she walks. I feel so melancholy. Lexy is 23" tall. I really don't think we could've got her down to lower than 65 lbs.

    :'(

It does sound to me like you have made absolutely the right decision. It is not your fault that she is overweight and in need of rehoming - that is entirely her current owners' responsibility. I agree that with a dog that height you'd struggle to get her down to the weight limit you need. She'd need to stay very, very lean (ribs showing). And if your son was intimidated then that is no good...he needs to feel safe around the dog.

It is a real shame that she did not turn out to be the right dog for your family but you have made the right call in holding out for a dog that is. There are plenty of other dogs in need out there and one of them will be just right for you :) Please don't feel bad. It's terrific that you are going to be able to help out some dog in need - it just did not turn out to be Lexy but it will be some other lucky dog instead.

Keep looking, Meg. The right dog for your family is out there somewhere but it's sad for you that Lexy isn't that dog.

If you had doubts and worries you've made the right call. Let us know how you get on with your search.

That is so sad for Lexy....but as I have said before for all sorts of things, you have to do what is right for your family.
No doubt at all the right dog of whatever flavour will be along soon.
    Fingers crossed for you.

Ah, that's sad - but if you rehome a dog, you'll help another one.

I do think though, you might consider a smaller dog than a Labrador. This weight limit thing you have, it's 27kg. Lots of Labradors are lighter than that, but lots aren't. It's not unusual for a Labrador to be 27kgs and above - you'd need to be looking at a lightly built bitch to never have to worry about keeping it on a diet to meet the conditions of where you live....

Sorry Lexy didn't work out for you, but there is no point going down the adoption route unless you are convinced that the dog is right for you.

There is a dog out there for you and I know that you will make a good responsible owner.

There is a good responsible owner out there for Lexy.

Which is more than can be said of her previous owner, letting a dog get so fat that it is handicapped by their weight is totally unfair.

Don't forget to tell us what you eventually get. It says Labrador in the title, but we like ALL dogs here.

No, you are not rotten at all. If you have a weight limit then you have no choice about that.

It's so sad for the dog, I am angry with her owners for putting their own holidays before their dog :'(

I'm sorry it didn't work out but you have to do the right thing for your family or you're starting out all wrong. You'll find the right dog eventually. I agree with Julie too - a lab may not be the right dog with the weight restriction and if your son is intimidated by some dog you might want a smaller dog to start with. Temperament is THE most important thing in a family dog :D

    Cavalier Spaniels are great.

Same temperament as labs but smaller and easy to manage.

I had two rescues who lived to a happy and healthy 15 - they were great with my kids :)

Sorry to hear that you decided you couldn't adopt Lexy. As others have said the right dog is out there waiting to meet you and your family. Looking forward to hear from you when that right dog comes along

You all are wonderful! Thank you for your support. I am also sad and angry about/with the owners. They even have a nice pool and won't let Lexy swim in it even though she says Lexy loves swimming :'( They also keep her outside all day because the "husband doesn't like dogs as much as she does" but let her in at night.

THANK YOU Molly, this is awesome

OH I will look into these Boogie, thanks!

Yes Julie I think you are right. Unless I do find a small lab. Problem is though...we'd like a calmer lab, so probably a senior, we need a lab that is good with cats, and one that is the right size. So that is a "tall" order :)

I really like you all x

Aw she sounds and looks like a lovely girl and I'm sure someone else will be able to take her on and give her the home she deserves. Even if you didn't have a weight restriction it sounds like it would not have been the right choice for your family.
There will be another lovely dog waiting out there for you :)
