Hiya, I am off to the westcountry game fair today and of course will be taking murphy with me. The thing is i have been doing lots of stuff to stop him pulling on the lead but not when there is other dogs around and at the moment he could be walking nicely and then as soon as he sees another dog he lunges around. I am now dreading going as i can imagine him possibly pulling my arm off to try and get to all the other dogs! Usually around the streets where i live as there arnt many dogs he is just on a flat collar and normal lead, but I think today he may end up hurting himself pulling and I also dont want him. To think he can go back to pulling. So.. Shall i put a back fastening harness on that I happen to have which although he could still pull will at least not damage his throat, or shall i use a figure of 8 lead which is a bit like a halti and so stops them pulling because its uncomfortable? Hes not really used to the figure of 8 and the only times Iv used it he spent the whole time trying to get it off his nose! Any ideas? Im definately silly for not thinking about this sooner as I am leaving in less than an hour!
Re: Quick advice needed! Have to say being a figure 8 fan, in this instance I would go for....... The harness!! And a pocket full of high value treats. Shame there isn't a front ring on your harness though (guessing not). Hope youenjoyyourday!
Re: Quick advice needed! Im going to stop at the pet shop and see if theyve got one! Is a halti harness the same thing? Its different to the halti headcollar. X
Re: Quick advice needed! You might have already left... I'd go for a back fastening harness with the shortest lead you have. I actually use just a handle on a back fastening harness in serious pulling situations. It keeps the dog by your side, and gives you more control. It also works to have just a handle on a flat collar. The less distance between your hand and the collar/harness the less leverage the dog has to swing about and lunge. This is the one I use: short lead by JulieTandCharlie, on Flickr I use a padded fleece harness. Pets at home does a good mesh harness that I used to use.
