Hi everyone, apologies if this has been talked about before. Yesterday was the first time it has rained since Ash started going out on walks. During the walk the heavens literally opened and he went crazy. Sprinting around, spinning, rolling, jerking back and forth and being really difficult to control. I'm not sure if he hated the rain or it made him go into an excitement frenzy but it was a real ordeal getting him home. When I was towelling him off at home he went so hyper he bit me really hard. I was wondering if I should get a raincoat and if anyone else has experienced this? The breeder says dogs don't need clothes but Ash is just not a fan of water yet.

    Re: Rain

I should imagine heavy rain could be a bit of a shock for a pup that has only experienced nice weather on walks upto now.

I've never used a coat on my Labradors. Their coats are waterproof and thick. There are a lot of forum members who do though. Hopefully they can give you advice.

I did get a coat when my old lab was 15 for the winter. He hated it and refused to walk in it. ::)

Ash will get used to the rain. Unfortunately with our weather he will have to. ;). He might not like it though. My old lab didnt care what the weather. The two I have now aren't overly keen to go out in heavy rain at first but once out they aren't bothered.

The going hyper whist drying isn't unusual. My two still get excited when getting dry. Scott rolls on the floor and they both dive through my legs as I towel so I end up getting wet while they get dry. ::). Towels and the whole drying thing can be seen as an exciting game. ::)

Obviously if it starts to rain while you are walking there isn't a lot you can do but I think I'd start taking him out in the garden and play with him in the rain. Get him used to it while doing something he finds fun.

    Sorry not much help :)

Oh yes - drying is definitely a game in our house too.
I can't say we had any problems with the rain, but can relate to the reaction as we had a similar thing with the snow when Lilly was a little older right enough.
    Its just so exciting! ;D

He'll soon get used to the rain. Just carry on and he'll soon get used to it (unfortunately!). ;D ;D ;D

Thanks everyone. I love your suggestion of playing out in the rain Jen. I think everyone is right, he's just not used to the rain as it's been so lovely and warm. Xxxx

Quite missed the sun today but can't avoid the rain here unfortunately. Was a shock to my own system never mind the pups!

For the towelling off game, I usually try to stuff a bit of the towel in Holly's mouth. She chews on that happily rather than me while the rest of her wriggles around in delight in the drying off game.
