Its 8:35am and Rolo hasnt made a peep. He usually wakes between 6-7 im soooo grateful for the lie in!
Don't worry, ladies - as soon as you can safely do the jog/hike thing with your pups the "dog personal trainer" will be in full effect. I have the opposite problem now - I just can't motivate myself to even go for a walk, let alone a jog, without a dog. I mean...what the heck am I supposed to do with my ARMS with no leash to hold onto? It's really weird, they just kind of flop at my sides like little penguin flippers.
It's just wrong to go for a walk without a dog! If someone ever suggests going for a walk in a location that dogs aren't allowed (i.e. so many bloomin places in Australia) I tell them it would be a complete waste of a walk if Ella can't come too!
Thought I'd lost Ella tonight. We'd just finished playing in the dam and were walking back towards the house when a rabbit darted out of a bush. Ella shot off like a rocket and I just knew that my recall (while usually pretty good) was useless. She flew towards the edge of the property but pulled up slightly as she approached the fence. I used the opportunity to call her back and thankfully she came running. Phew, that was enough excitement for one day.
I've just seen a video of scent-hurdles, which I'd never come across before. It's like flyball, except that the dog retrieves its own dumbbell from among a collection of dumbbells placed at the end of the course and returns with it over the low jumps. In the video I saw, the dogs in the team each wore a numbered vest and the dumbbells were numbered so you could tell if they'd picked up the right one. I though it looked fun. It was much slower than flyball, because the dogs needed to stop and sniff at the end.
That sounds like great fun @Joy - I must admit that watching flyball makes me wonder about the stresses on the dog's joints as they turn on the board. Scent hurdles sounds like a lot less physical strain on the dog.
It worries me too. I don't know anyone who does it to ask.I know i worry too much about this kind if thing, but i bet they get a lot of rsi type problems.
I don't think they'd do enough repetitions to suffer rsi. I did about 6 sessions and even the really good dogs only did about 4 runs and not one after the other. Clubs also teach a way of turning onto the board to protect joints. I simply thought the alternative scent version looked interesting (and more accessible to my slow-paws!)
Yep it seems a lot more steady, I just can't manage a lot of rushing around now. I thinking about taking Rory to do some agility but I honestly don't know if I can cope with it physically or mentally. I am thinking if another training class just to see if i can cope in a more busy enviroment. I not sure if i can.
Do you have canine freestyle (also known by the less dignified name of doggie dancing) in your area? I did beginning and intermediate classes with Brogan and they were much more low key and "go at your own pace" than agility. I like agility too, but because you work the course in a line behind other people most of the time, there is pressure to keep moving fairly quickly. Canine freestyle was more about learning the moves you and your dog like and putting a routine together. Some of the people were there with an eye to competing and they were a bit too hard core for me, but the rest of us were just there for fun. More than any kind of obedience I did with Brogan, it gave him the most amazing heel. Even when he was old and grey, I could sashay him backwards around a sock display in a department store and we'd look at each other as if we were both thinking, "Hey, doggie dancing!"
I was up poorly during the night and Stanley sat next to me on the couch giving me nice snuggles. Then this morning he slept in until 10am so I could have a lie in. That puppydog is getting spoilt rotten today!
I did doggie dancing with the others but I found so embarrassing. Did it though cos Doug enjoyed it and Moo hated it and agility, she likes quiet calm obedience classes . I just looking round for something fun for me a brown dog to do. I might try agility again you never know i might be able to cope wuth a bit of help. I saw some other things at crufts I might try to find out about locally
Not doggy thoughts at all, but I have a cold and was wondering why only one nostril is blocked. So I looked it up. Ever heard of the nasal cycle? http://mentalfloss.com/article/30363/why-does-your-nose-get-stuffy-one-nostril-time
Well, OF COURSE it's embarrassing! I think that kind of goes without saying. But I have a solid history of embarrassing myself in dance classes, and at least for those classes with Brogan I could say I was just doing it "for the dog". No video of those bygone days, but here's a fairly accurate representation:
i tend to fall over and injure myself all my dogs know i can fall on them unintentionally so there's always and added element of risk . I danger up doggie dancing
Omg no, the dog after the lab (2.35) what a fun routine! Dude just wanted to dress up as centurion (gladiator? I'm not a classicist) and show off his guns
