My 9 month old lab has been sick on 3 separate occasions in the last week. The first was in the car after a visit to the beach, the second was yesterday on a walk and the third was tonight in the garden. All have been quite a while after eating and I haven’t caught her eating anything that she hasn’t eaten before. I wonder if it’s down to the hot UK weather at the moment and if any other labs are suffering? She can be quite sleepy in the heat but I take her for a swim to cool off. She’s seems happy in herself, exercising, eating and drinking well etc. I changed her food from Skinners F&T puppy food/kibble (which she was weaned on) a few weeks back to Skinners F&T Junior kibble. The vet did mention the other day that as the working dog feed is high in protein that she might be climbing the walls but no problems with this but her poo can be VERY smelly at times and she still poos quite a lot. I’ve kept her on 3 smaller feeds a day but wondering if taking her back to two feeds or taking her off Skinners may be an idea? Does anyone else have experience of Skinners?
Hi there, it's likely the hot weather is making her vomit, but if it continues and you are unsure I think a chat with the vet would be in order. I had Cassie, who is now 2, on skinners junior, about a year ago I had problems with some hyper behaviour, the behaviourist I consulted suggested among other things changing her food, I eventually did so, looking to cut out e numbers. Your vet may not be far wrong! I finally decided on BURNS Original chicken and Brown rice, and the effect has been quite dramatic. Like your puppy she farted a lot and did soft smelly poos, but since going onto burns this has stopped unless she has eaten something she shouldn't! A year ago she weighed 32 kiss, admittedly she was having phantom pregnancy, she now weighs 25.5kg, 4 months post spay. So I am very pleased I made the change. Lots of people get on just fine with skinners for their adult dogs though. I hope this helps a bit.
Perhaps she got too much sea water in her stomach. They can vomit or having runny poos after a beach visit. The other times I don’t know. It could be the hot weather. Best is to walk her early mornings and late evenings. In between walks just short and after peeing/pooing straight to home in the shade. If you don’t trust it give the vet a call. Let her drink much. I give Finn when it is hot cooled watermelon or cucumber. He loves this!
Maisy is currently on Adult Skinners Field & Trial Duck & Rice, and has also had the Salmon and the Lamb. I can't say I have noticed any difference in her energy nor her poos and she has not had problems with vomiting either, but she is 15 months and on the Adult version. (Salt water can make them vomit)
Thanks for this. As I mentioned no issues with behaviour but I’ll certainly look at Burns for the poo quantity, smell and farts!! Bailey’s weight is also good, she’s been spayed and weight isn’t an issue but something I’ll need to keep an eye on.
I’ll try the watermelon and see what she thinks..... she’d only been to the beach one out of the three times as she goes in the river most of the time. She always has an early morning and late evening walk so she’s out of the hot weather. Will keep an eye on her and also look at her food.
