I know all puppies weight differently at certain ages and that there are some wee toots and some on the upper end of the scale, but how fast should they gain? Pipers put on a pound in a week. Is that normal??
At Piper's age, Willow was putting on just under one kilogram a week, so about twice as much as Piper. Some weeks it was more, but that tended to even itself out the following week. At 8 weeks, all the litter weighed about the same amount, 5kg. Between 8 weeks and 15 weeks, she put on 6kg. We brought Shadow home when he was 14 weeks. Bearing in mind, these pups are from the same litter, Willow is a girl and Shadow is a boy, you'd expect them to be similar or Shadow a bit more. But, because he'd had to compete for his food, at 15 weeks, when Willow was 10.9kg, he was a measly 8.8kg. Now, they both weigh the same amount (just under 22kg - they're still little!), and Shadow is strong and healthy. It was a bit of a struggle to get weight on him, because feeding him too much would end up in him having runny poos, so he was rather skinny throughout his puppyhood and only started filling out when he got to about a year of age. I couldn't tell you what is "normal", but that's my experience. Shadow seemed to reach his proper size and weight regardless of the fact that he had much slower gains.
Juno used to gain around 0.5 kg (1.1lb) per week from the time we brought her home at 10.5 weeks. She's normally been weighed every four weeks at the vets and the gain was always around the 2kg mark give or take the odd 100gms. The only blip came in April when she was recovering from her surgery and on restricted exercise of 3 x 3 minute walks per day, which was my fault as I didn't think to reduce her food . Next time she was weighed she was fine particularly with the slow increase in activity. She now weighs somewhere between 24.5 kg and 25kg with a nice waist and tuck up. Slow and steady weight gain is good
Saba was 10kg when we brought him home at 10 weeks. Now, at 12 weeks, he's 12 kg on a fairly consistent kibble (Hills Scientific for Large Puppies) intake of 300g per day, including his training rewards. He is from working stock, and has BIG feet; the Vet predicts he'll be a large Lab, and we will need to keep an eye on his weight gain while he's growing. We're back at the Vets for a weigh-in and puppy check in two weeks time.
You're right about the variety in weights - just have a look at the "how much does your puppy weigh" thread! Our Pongo is a big boy, and always has been. He put on almost exactly 1 kg per week for the first few months of his life. He levelled off eventually at 39kgs.
Rocco's fairly consistent at 26kg (working lines), I think had he not had a bad puppyhood he'd prob have been bigger. Pipers from pure working lines and her feet are massive and her legs are long. She'll prob overtake him!!!
