Re: a big thank you He looks grrrrrrreat in the pics Teena Ann,lovely shine on his coat in the last one x
Re: a big thank you Lovely boy. I try with Lilly to keep exercise consistent and not to have lazy days during the week then extra long walks or excessive exercise at the weekends. I think that and keeping her weight down to be the most important things. We do some swimming in a doggy pool but that is more fun than proper hydrotherapy. Trouble is with these dogs, they don't know their limitations - Lilly will still go full-tilt off after a deer and then suffer for a couple days afterwards :'(

Re: a big thank you Thank you Bob Rachel nd Jacqui....surprising all of u mentioned abt his coat its been a long tym since i gave him a bath.. But still thank u so much. Had a doubt as to hw long should one be continuing on the supplements for the coat nd bone health??? My vet tld me to stop it as its not necessary anyomore?? any idea on this
Re: a big thank you Well, my orthopaedic vet recommended supplementing with omega-three fish oil capsules, and said that glucosamine didn't have any evidence to support its use. I know we discussed this previously, and several members brought in opinions on it, but also some evidence, so say that it didn't make any difference using supplements. I will try and find a link to that thread. jac
Re: a big thank you Hey guys hope all of u r doin well. The last 2 days were the most tiring and stressful for me nd Cooper as i tuk him to the vet to check the condition of his hips Xrays revealed he has Bilateral Hip Dysplasia i.e on both is legs... i became distraught to hear it even more shocking news was tat he was found to be aneamic (blood count low as 8.4) i did not knw wat made him anemic as he is free from ticks and gets gud food and plenty of water. So a blood smear wa taken to knw the exact cause for which the results will be ready by tomorrow. As for his hips i was advised to feed him only Royal Canin and no other home made food not even chicken beef eggs etc im worried he is picky and doesnt eat his kibble much except wen i pour over stock wat should i do pls help i cant stop him from eating his fav food lyk beef, chicken eggs nd fish????.. i was also advised to maintain his body weight (32kgs at 16 months or 1 yr 4 months) with moderate exercise wat types of excercise can be given any ideas or suggestions that i can follow will be really helpful.
Re: a big thank you Tina I am sorry you have had this news, but you suspected there was something wrong and it is better to know so that you can take steps to make sure Cooper remains as healthy as possible. Personally I can't see what is wrong with giving Cooper chicken, beef or etc, but you will have to decide that for yourself. If he only eats his kibble when you pour stock over it, then that's not a problem - you could always cook up a bit of stewing beef in water, then chop the beef up really small and pour it and the stock over the kibble. Regarding the hip dysplasia - the main thing is to keep his weight down. 32 kg sounds quite a lot, and he certainly doesn't look thin at all on his photos, so don't worry about him not eating! Moderate exercise means walking or swimming (I know you said that is difficult where you live). He shouldn't do too much jumping, but don't worry too much, just make sure he gets at least an hour of exercise a day. That is a minimum, as he needs to build up his muscles to help compensate for the problem in his hips. I don't know anything about the anemia I am afraid. I know there are lots of people on here whose dogs have hip dysplasia. I know they will be on giving you advice, but I just wanted to say don't be too downhearted, Cooper will manage and so will you.
Re: a big thank you Hi Teena I'm sorry about coopers test results. As Karen has said its important not to let him get overweight with hip problems so in one way the fact he is fussy eating is good. My old lab was a fussy eater and I never had any weight problems with him. Did the vet tell you why he couldn't have any chicken etc ? Maybe he was thinking about the extra calories on top of his kibble. I don't think a bit of chicken would do any harm. Would he eat his kibble if you mixed some little bits of chicken in with it or perhaps chicken stock rather than beef ? Let us know what the vet says about the anemia. Cooper looks beautiful and a shiny coat is a sign of being fit and healthy not just because he's been washed so despite the anemia and his poor hips he looks well. ;D
Re: a big thank you Sorry to hear about Coopers health problems :'( I know you will do your best to look after him and make sure he has a good life
Re: a big thank you Thank u Jen,Naya,&Rachel i knw its difficult to manage im moved to tears as im posting this he is sick puked 5 times continously after d vet visit today turns out tat the antibiotic tat they gave reacted wid milk which i gave after reaching home as he neva had his meal my bad nd stupidity but i did not knw tat should not give any diary products after tat particular antibiotic has been administered nd no one tld me.. ... Regarding homemade food the vet suggested tat i give him only kibble for both d meals which is impossible as i feed him kibble for one meal nd the 2nd meal consits of rice nd meat, fish, veggies or eggs alternatively. The reason i give him kibble oly once is tat he eats it only at tat tym nd not for the 2nd meal he is very picky i don knw hw else to get him to eat.. . But i decided to feed him hw i normally feed him but in less quantities so tat he doesnt gain weight i cant prevent him from eating meats as they r his fav nor will he eat lyk tat. Hope im ryt
Re: a big thank you Teena, I'd stop giving him the rice as there is no value in that for a dog. But meat, chicken, fish and eggs should be fine as a second meal (in my opinion, though I don't want to contradict your vet...). A small quantity of vegetables would be ok too, but make most of it meat. I'm sorry that he was sick after you got home, but don't worry, I'm sure he will be ok. Was the antibiotic an injection or one given into his mouth? If it was one given into his mouth he may have vomited it up. Did you talk to the vet about the vomiting?
Re: a big thank you So sorry to hear about the news, Teena. Hopefully you can get Cooper on a programme that helps. Maybe the vet told you to only feed Royal Canin because heh thinks this will be the easiest thing for you to both make sure Cooper has. Balanced diet, and for you to control his intake! These things are very important now.
Re: a big thank you Hi Teena. Sorry you are so upset by this, but it's not the end of the world. Dogs can lead happy and full lives with an HD diagnosis and with care and so you should try and keep your spirits up. When Lilly was diagnosd, even though sbe was not overweight our vet advised us to cut her feed down by a 1/3 to keep her slim as possible. And also to build up lead walking to an hour twice a day. We also do swimming for fun but its good for hips too. I agree with Rachael about cutting the rice and continuing with the meat fish and veg for tea. Just reduce the quantities. Honestly he will cope fine. Lilly didn't bother as long as she got two meals. honestly don't worry too much just look after him and let him have fun
Re: Re: a big thank you Hi teena, I'm sorry I'm only just catching up with this! I can totally sympathise with you on the hip dysplasia front - my girl was diagnosed earlier this year at only a month so younger than your pup is now. Penny's hips are extremely loose and come at least 50% out of their sockets when she moves. My vet recommend omega 3 fish oils and also said that glucosamine has been shown to have little effect. He also recommend we start s program of physiotherapy to help strengthen all the core muscles as well as the ones that hold the hips in place as this will give a tighter hip socket and hopefully delay onset of arthritis. We saw the physiotherapist for three sessions and then she gave us exercises to continue at home which we do 2-3 times a week to keep up her muscle tone. We were not told to limit her exercise but i suspect that will come later as her hips get worse as she ages. Hydrotherapy to improve muscle strength around the joints is something else we will have to consider but not yet - the physio and ortho vet are happy that the physio exercises are enough for now. I don't know why your vet would insist you stick to the Royal Canin food only and not supplement with homemade food - I can see no real benefit to this, though perhaps he is thinking this could be what's caused the anaemia?
