Re: a big thank you 1. Julie,Penny and Jacqui his antibiotics were given as an injection but d problem was i shouldn have given him d milk as it was d main reason he puked bcoz d antibiotic is powerful and Cooper was not supposed to be fed immediately tat too wid a diary product which i neva knew but as of now he is back to normal, active and alert after the vet visited and gave him some injections but was advised to keep him off milk and other diary products for 2-3 days and feed him food tat his light on his stomach. 2. Regarding the rice if im supposed to stop rice hw do u want me to feed meat and other home made food do u want me to jus boil the meat and serve wid the stock in the form of a soup and if tats wat u mean will it be enuf??? will he be full?? wont he gain weight if i feed him meat??? I have been advised to feed him foods rich in fibre and currently hunting for kibble that contains fibre. What type of fibres can i give him and hw do i get him to eat it bcoz he is fussy and he may not like the taste of it!!! 3.He is anemic bcoz his cells and bone marrow are not producing the required amount of RBC's and their count is way too low i don knw hw he became lyk this and the oly person left to blame is me i should have seen it coming or should have taken care of him more and fed him properly vet says other than the hips he his a healthy active and alert dog who is well maintained but im not convinced :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[. 4. HD diagnosis said that it can be maintained and nuthing else can be done was asked to confine him to a crate so he can rest and not allowing him to jump, run or do aything that may stress his joints i.e normal activity like walking swimming etc but nuthin that causes him to limp or feel the pain a review after a period of 6 months will be done to check the progression the thing is hw do i confine him to a crate as he is not crate trained and he doesnt like to be left alone(follows us will be wid us wherever we go) hw do i get him to rest or confine him to 1 place???
Re: a big thank you I think to some extent you have to go with your instincts on this Teena. I personally wouldn't start trying to confine him to a crate now, if he is in the house with you he's not going to be jumping around madly so I wouldn't worry too much, and it just won't be fair on him. I would say, don't worry too much about the rice. If you like giving it to him, just cut the amount in half. He doesn't NEED it, but I don't think that a bit of rice is going to do him any harm. You just don't want him getting fat - in fact he could probably lose a little bit, which would be good for his joints. Also I don't understand the panic about his low red blood count, if the vet says that apart from his hips he is healthy, alert, active and well maintained? It sounds to me that you have been doing a grand job. In my opinion, you are looking after him very well. You give him good food (apart from the milk; no dog needs milk, it is NOT good for him). You take him for walks, keep him in a nice place, and you love him. He is happy. His hips will give him pain as he gets older, but presumably you can get pain killers for him, if he needs that? I think as long as you keep him slim, give him a moderate amount of exercise, continue to feed him sensibly, and give him lots of love, he will be a happy dog with a good life.
Re: Re: a big thank you I'm not sure I agree with the confinement to a crate for long periods in the hopes it will help his prognosis with the hip dysplasia... I'm not sure I understand how that would help - surely it would just make things worse because if he's on crate rest his muscles will begin to waste, when what he really should be doing is strengthening them? I understand the bit about restricting the jumping up and going up and down stairs etc but don't know why you have been told that there is nothing that can be done? Hip dysplasia cannot really be cured certainly but the dogs quality of life can be improved and the onset of arthritis delayed by management such as physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. I think I would be seeking a second opinion from a different vet on this one...
Re: a big thank you Teena Ann,you take every best care of Cooper, you do your very best with him so don't blame yourself for anything.I agree with some of the other members the vet has probably told you to keep him on kibble to make it the easier for you to monitor his weight. I had a scare ( it ended up being a wrong medical test result ) where I was told Dexter was anaemic ....it was investigated further as it was such a mystery...he had NO symptoms whatsoever and he was showing to be dangerously anemic. The vet diagnosed Erlichia a disease that comes from a tick bite.He was put on a course of steroids.....it all ended up being unnecessary as he DIDNT have Erlichia ....I don't want to add something else to your worries but it might be worth mentioning to your vet. Give your lovely Cooper a big pat and tummy rub from me, Best wishes Angela
Re: a big thank you Teena Ann , I am sorry that I missed your bad news , but one thing is for sure , you have been a wonderful owner for Cooper , always asked for advice and always done your very very best . Please dont blame yourself , just follow your Vets advice and remember , we are always here to support you even if we cant actually do anything xxx
Re: a big thank you Oh Teena Ann I am sorry you have had such worrying news, but like everyone has said you look after Cooper so well so please try not to worry, listen to your vet and you will manage that's for sure. We are all here for you and Cooper xxx
Re: a big thank you Hi Teena You have a lot of questions about what to feed Cooper, and it's right as Karen says that you shouldn't be giving him milk. I'm not quite sure why you don't follow the vet's advice and feed him only kibble - the vet has said that you should feed him the Royal Canin kibble so why are you looking for a different one? Unless you disagree with why your vet has said this, it really might be because he thinks this is the best way for Cooper to get a balanced diet where you can control the intake easily, rather than you trying to make up a diet from human food. It's perfectly possible to feed a raw diet of meat and bones and so on, but it does take a bit of research to get it right. And it doesn't sound like that's what you want to do. It sounds like you just want to feed Cooper some human food in part instead of his kibble. Sorry if I've misunderstood what you are trying to do.
It might help to think about what the vet has said, and why he has said it. Is the crate rest to stop Cooper running or jumping on slippery floors in the house for example? And this must always be prevented? Or did the vet mean that for a short period of time Cooper needs crate rest in order to ease any discomfort that he is in now and then you are to build his exercise back up? If you need to put Cooper in a crate in order to follow your vet's advice, you can crate train him. This can be done over a couple of weeks or even a weekend if Cooper is ok with it. There are articles on the main site which would help you with this.
Re: a big thank you The blood smear test results for Cooper came and it was found to be normal but still cant figure out wat is causing him to be anemic jus as Angela said the results might be wrong too but the et as prescribed some supplement to check the issue. Julie thanks for ur concern ill be glad to provide Cooper the kibble and i have no prob in spending or giving the Kibble only if he eats it he jus doesnt want kibble i have tried so many ways to get him eat it but no use ryt now im pouring over some chicken stock to get him to eat jus 1 meal of the kibble if he is fussy wat do u want me to do tats y i asked if i can give him home made food but in less quantities so tat he doesnt gain weight and regarding the crate training its difficult to train him now and he wont even go inside it let alone bein confined i agree wid the vet but im trying my best to prevent him from running or jumping on slippery floors..... :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[Thank u every1 for ur love care and advice hope Cooper gets well.. will keep u guys updated abt his progress
Re: a big thank you
regarding the crate training its difficult to train him now and he wont even go inside it let alone bein confined i agree wid the vet but im trying my best to prevent him from running or jumping on slippery floors..... :-[ :-[ :-[ :-
Do you mean that the vet has recommended that he is in a crate when you are not able to make sure that he is prevented from running and jumping on slippery floors inside? I had noticed that in your photos you seem to have a lot of smooth, hard floors in your house.
Re: a big thank you I was wondering the same as Julie... Also I am confused - if his blood tests are ok how do you know he is anaemic?
Re: a big thank you
I was wondering the same as Julie... Also I am confused - if his blood tests are ok how do you know he is anaemic?
I think the blood smear is different to the blood count, and rather than looking for anaemia per se, looks for abnormal blood cells and parasites and such like. I think :-\
Re: a big thank you Yes Jacqi is ryt he has no parasites in his blood but his RBC was low but tbey cant figure out wats d reason for this as his scan results of the liver and other organs are normal and yes there are slippery floors in my house and tats d reason i was asked to crate him to reduce his jumping and running ryt now i restrain him with the leash and tie him up not for long jus for sometime and tat too under my supervision that way he doesnt feel lonely i do this bcoz im totally against tying up dogs its in humane to which he adjusts other than tat i don knw wat else to do i reduced the amount of food i feed him give him moderate excercise nd also supplements to relieve pain and support his joints
Re: a big thank you What kind of chicken stock are you using on his food, Teena? Home-made stock from boiled chicken pieces or stock made from concentrated cubes or powder? Stock cubes and powder can have quite a lot of salt and I'd avoid giving that daily. That won't be related to the anaemia but it's just something to keep in mind.
Re: a big thank you I'd also suggest that if possible putting down rubber-backed mats or rugs on your floor might help reduce the slipping. I know that is not easy, and perhaps your parents won't agree, but it might make life easier for Cooper and would mean you don't have to tie him up or leave him in a crate so much.
Re: a big thank you Rachel and Karen i use home made broth nd i prepare it myself and he knws it and comes and sits with me in the kitchen knowing tats for him not commercial ones as they have high salt content i cant keep him off the stairs im trying but fail everytym as for the carpet or rug should i place it in places wer he sits or sleeps or around the entire house??? But i noticed this wenever he plays wid keys he takes the keys puts them on the mat and then takes the mat along wid the key in his mouth shakes it off till the key drops and does the same thing over and over does it mean anything or is he jus fascinated by that : : : im gonna change is kibble to science plan joint and mobility jus for 2 months to see how it works on him hope he gets well my vet also suggested tat i give him lots of veggies fish and greens and abt 75gms of rice if giving it wid meat but 100gms of dog food im following that ryt now reduced his protein intake a bit less veggies im trying him to get to eat bcoz he doesnt like them but i wont give up hope all this doesnt go in vain..
Re: a big thank you Hi Teena I've just been catching up with your news. I was wondering can you get the science plan joint and mobility diet as a wet food rather than kibble. Have you tried cooper with wet dog food ? Some fussy eaters, my old lab was one, will eat wet food much better than kibble. If he will eat wet food you could also mix wet food and kibble if you prefer him to eat some dry food or you cant get the joint diet as a wet food. Just substitute some dry for wet and mix it up. With my old dog he had to have a special dry diet when he got old but he also got fussier eating so I found some good wet food that had fish as the protein so smelly and tasty : and substituted a small amount of his dry for the fish. He loved it. He would've also loved human food but unfortunately he had a very sensitive stomach so I had to find an alternative to using chicken, beef etc which is what I'd given him when he was young. Luckily he liked fishy wet dog food ;D
Re: a big thank you Hey Jen thanks for catching up im switching him to Science plan joint nd mobility dry food as the vet suggested by nxt month as his old food is yet to get over he doesnt mind wet food i tried ur method of mixing wet nd dry food he doesnt eat thats y i use home made broth abt the wet food in the Science plan joint category i don knw hw it smells or tastes or hw it luks as i have been giving him pedigree liver chunks in gravy wet food mixed wid rice sometimes apart from that i feed him fish eggs beef chicken nd carrots but in moderation considering his weight nd hip issue..
