Re: Vet check before adopting Thank you Karen and Barbara. It's so lovely to have people thinking of me and my Labrador dramas and just so pleased that I joined the forum. If you could ask your friend I would really appreciate that Karen. Somebody else recommended looking at failed sniffer dogs so that could be another route to go down. At least if the organisation is military they would understand the obstacles families in the forces face and would let me rehome abroad.
Re: Vet check before adopting Hi Barbara, Thank you very much for your private message. I tried to reply but it said that I couldn't; I'm such a technophobe! I shall be contacting her today and finding out some more details. Thank you also to Karen, your help is much appreciated as well. I did speak to a lady in Pilates today and she is going to ask around for me but I think some things were lost in translation and I might end up with a cat!
Re: Vet check before adopting Did you look at this site? http://lab.rescueme.org/nl Poor old chap, looking for a homeā¦
Re: Vet check before adopting Thanks for the website Karen, very kind of you to have sent the link. I shall be e-mailing them to put me on their list. He looks older than my 11 year old and it would be heart wrenching to lose them both at the same time so I'm looking for a younger dog up to 6 years old.
Re: Vet check before adopting My patience has paid off. A couple of weeks ago I dashed back to England with Rosie-dog as the Defence Animal Centre had some of their labs up for adoption. Some of them were too boisterous for her but she chose a very chilled out 5 year old yellow lab. I had to put in a sealed bid and got the call when I was back in The Netherlands to say that our bid was successful. I could have cried! My parents collected him from Leicester and brought him over a few days ago and we couldn't be happier. He has settled in very nicely and just loves chasing after his ball when Rosie potters about; a match made in heaven.
Re: Vet check before adopting Many, many congratulations - that's wonderful! I hope you have lovely times ahead. Re: Vet check before adopting Hi Julie, Thank you for your reply. I'm not too sure why I can't reply to your post on the main page. Army dogs have now been privatised and so when you adopt a dog, you have to put the amount you would be prepared to pay for the dog into an envelope. The Colonel then opens the envelopes and who ever has placed the highest bid, gets the dog. Even the handler who wants the dog has to go through the same process which I think is awful; for the handler and for the dog. They could have been on many tours together and I think the handler should be given first refusal which is what it used to be like until it was privatised. My dog didn't have a handler so I was pleased about that otherwise I wouldn't have bid on him. Best wishes, Camilla
Re: Vet check before adopting I see, well, they are probably fantastic dogs - I wish you many happy years ahead. Photos when you get a chance?
