So, as my son is off to his fathers for a week. My now...8 week old pup and I have some quality time available to us to commence a training schedule in terms of FINALLY becoming house trained. Can someone please give me some idea as to where to begin. He is currently seated beside me on the couch. I DO let him outside to do his business and yes there are some major mishaps indoors but my main concern is getting him to go to one spot and one spot only. He sits there for hours upon hours doing absolutely nothing. I know my issue is a little less important than those of obedience etc but heck I'm starting to get so frustrated. I'm hoping this week alone without interuption will move things along... :-\

Yay!!! He stayed and sat !!! He understands hand commands ~!!! The kibble treating really does work ...My little bright spark !! Im so excited !!! I even tossed his favorite toy to the side to see if he would move and he didnt !!!! It's either that or he's having me on ...hehehe Only thing I cannot master is him doing his business all over the place on the front patio...Is there no way to ensure he goes to a specific spot ?

    Good news and well done!!

Yes, you can teach him that the patio is not the place to do his business - but it will mean doing the same thing you did in the house - I.e. keeping an eye on him all the time he is out there.

Eventually he will probably learn of his own accord, because dogs don't really like their faeces near where they live, but that may take quite some time. All my dogs first learned not to do their business in the house, then after a month or so they learned the front garden was not a great place either, and they started only relieving themselves down in the back garden. At some point I noticed they would all rather wait until I took them out for a walk! You'll get there, don't worry.

Brilliant! my dogs did exactly the same as Karens, now only occassionally is there anything to clear up in the yard/garden. He is still a baby and he will learn. Keep up the good work. Helen x

That's a really good point Karen, I hadn't thought about it before but Riley was the same. First not in the house and then gradually further and further away. Now if he goes in the garden at all it's right behind the nut bushes at the very far end. It can make clearing up tricky but he mostly goes on his walks so I'll forgive him :)

The thing I am noticing is that he always goes on the same spot ! Up the back of the patio where the wood is stored. I clean up daily considering its literally swamped with his overdues using anything and everything to avoid odour but yet he STILL prefers it there. Not in the same spot either...Its like he sits and moves off a bit and keeps on moving around ! groans hehehe Thanks for your input everyone...

I am convinced that McQueen prefers to be located outside the house on the veranda instead of indoors. Perhaps its because George annoys him..perhaps its the intense warmth in the home from the wood heater..I've no idea so I have relocated him outdoors with the freedom to be indoors during the day. Do you think Mcqueen is sick and tired of being told off by me at his every move indoors and senses more leniency outdoors? Anyone else ever had this ? As for retrieving his toy/ball etc hes a natural WITHOUT treats!!!! I must admit though he only brings whatever it is back for tug of war...heheh...Is it bad setting him up outside my front door where he has all the space to move with ease? I do not have an issue with having him indoors anymore ... but he seems to constantly be at the door and bringing him inside is a more than a chore ....
