Rusty got neutered the other day and I have been feeling sorry for him, so when i saw the butcher selling frozen pig ears for 75p I decided to get one. I gave it a goog and it seemed like the occasional pig ear shouldn't do any harm if you keep an eye on him. Which I am doing and he seems to love it. However I realised after I gave it to him that the forums I found were all talking about pigear treats which are like jerky versions of pig ears. that are small and leathery. This thing I got from the butchers is a frozen pigs ear. Its fleshy, has hairs, veins, cartilage, blood and earwax... did i make a mistake?
I feed my dog all sorts of stuff like this and he loves it. He is raw fed though - some people (not me) believe you shouldn't mix processed and raw food and I imagine a dog that only ever ate kibble might find ears a bit hard to digest.
Dogs eat all kinds of stuff and I'm sure your real frozen pig's ear is a lot healthier than ones from the pet shop, which are cooked in lots of fat, made with chemicals and frequently carry salmonella...
I gave Willow a pigs ear from a pet shop it was a dry thing like it had been cooked and dried. It made her sick though she did eat it quite fast. My other dogs ate them with no problems. The butchers ones seem better quality.
Tala is 7m not tried pigs ear as yet...have tried her with rawhide chews she loves them and keeps her busy for quite a time however when googled it seems that theyre not such a good idea just like the pig ears thing...what do others think ? I have given her Himalayan Yak chews which are quite hard and she just bits n bats at them ... any suggestions ?
