We seem to be struggling with recall when another dog is around. A dog walked by today and was I thought far enough away to not be an issue but 10 seconds after I let him off he sprinted off after this dog and didn't come back :(
    Any tips?

If you don’t have the book Total Recall I’d get it - it covers everything.

If you do have it, go to the last chapter on problems with recall :)

When there are other dogs about I start by letting them play and recalling when they’ve had a good play, then letting them go and play again. I’m constantly working on recall not being the end of the fun. I hold his collar before I treat but then it’s straight back off to play. I save my really high value treats for whistle recall, which I practice about four times every free run. At the end of the free run I don’t even call him, I just go up to him and put the lead on. That way he doesn’t learn that recall = lead.

I try to vary where we go as much as possible so that I can do hiding and about-turn without him predicting where I will be or where the end of the free run is. That way he keeps his eye on me and doesn’t go far.

So far so good - he recalled from a very excited red setter pup today.
