Over the last 3 years or so, my 7 year old retriever bitch has had multiple incidences of broken/split nails in her fore-feet. V painful, and has needed veterinary intervention to surgically remove the whole affected nail on each occasion.
    Any ideas about prevention/ cause?

She is fed on good quality complete diet kibble + sardines/mackerel + tripe + weekly bones.

She is v lively and often applies great pressure to her fore toes in running or taking off for a retrieve. The cause is no doubt partially a mechanical problem.

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar probs and found a cure?

    Thanks

    David

Have you ever heard of symmetrical lupiod oncodystophy. one of my dogs developed this due to an auto immune condition. He develpoed it at 6 and had it all his life. It can be managed not cured. It sounds like that what did your vet say it was.

Hi David and welcome to the forum. In addition to any medical issues, could it be that her nails are too long? The rule of thumb is that, when walking on a hard floor, you shouldn't hear any clicking.
