Hi All, I was wondering if there are any studies or known benefits of feeding Labradors red meat versus white meat? I understand every dog's taste buds may be different and allergies may play a factors as well, but are there any pros and cons to the types of meat? Example, the food brand I feed my boy, Orijen, has 2-3 choices of kibble 1. Chicken, Turkey, Wild fish, Eggs 2. Beef, Boar, Goat, Lamb, Mutton, Fish 3. Goat, Venison, mutton, bison, rabbit, duck, fish Other than the dog's taste buds or allergies - is white or red meat a "healthier" option? Any experiences or suggestions? Thanks
If feeding kibble, I wouldn't be concerned, because they will have ingredients and additives as needed to make it a complete diet. If feeding raw, I'd say a mix of protein sources is important.
I found this study which studied the effect of diet on mammary tumours in female dogs. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9595373 "The intake of homemade meals (compared to that of commercial foods) was also significantly related to a higher incidence of tumors and dysplasias. Other significant risk factors were a high intake of red meat, especially beef and pork, and a low intake of chicken." "In the multivariate analysis, older age, obesity at 1 year of age, and a high red meat intake were independently and significantly associated with the risk of developing mammary tumor and dysplasias." I the abstract at least, it doesn't define what a "high intake" means, and I'm guessing it would be significantly higher than the amount provided in a kibble.
