now i have mastered the recall i have been working on retrieves,.....normally i just throw the ball on an open fieldhe will fetch it back to me and drop it at my feet, i am happy with that, today i threw the ball into this,he had a good run round then came back out with his ball, after dropping it at my feet he ran back in and brought another ball out,.....not his ball, he must have spotted it when he went in for his ball

Well done Jasper. "We" have lost a lot of balls in similar terrain. On the upside "we" have also found a lot of other peoples lost balls. ;D

With the walking, just keep doing what you are doing - stop, turn etc etc. When he voluntarily walks nicely, mark and give him a treat (I avoid giving a treat for 'stopping pulling' though...has to be him choosing to walk nicely, if that makes sense, even if just for a few steps. The immediate reward for stopping pulling is continuing the walk...then if he keeps going well, give a treat). He is still very young and he is excited to start his walk - he will get there in the end and the whole walk will be 'guide dog' style. :)

Good Finding Jasper!! I have same issue with cuilli lynne she still pulls a lot on the way to her off lead walk in the morning but walks beautifully on the way back. And she's two so Should Know Better... ive reinforced it though by letting her reward herself, if I do the stopping unless she is walking nicely thing we wouldnt get anywhere by the time I have to go to work... ::). You've made me think about it again though...

    Re: retrieving

That looks like he's having fun. The only thing that occurs to me is that he seems surprised when he's swimming rather than wading so you might want to consider keeping his ball where he can wade and building his confidence before he swims AND retrieves :)

We started in a really shallow shelving place so that the swimming bit of the retrieve happened really gradually.

Having said that though he doesn't look unhappy or concerned in any way at all.....he's just working it all out so you may be fine just keeping going in the spots you already use.

    Love that waggy tail !!!!

    Re: retrieving

As he's so keen to get his ball - he wasn't giving up was he?! - you might find the retrieving is a good way to encourage him to swim more. Riley isn't anywhere near as brave as Jasper so we just gradually coaxed him further and further in with his ball until he was swimming with gusto.

    He's looking fab ;D
