We've just had a lovely afternoon with one of the people from our training class and her dog. Riley loves Crumpy!! Or Crumpet to give her her proper name....or strumpet to rename her She's taller than him, older than him and when he chases her she lies on her back and waves her legs in the air. She's also a curly coated retriever and you don't get many of those to the pound!! Jean is trying to work her but as a breed they're so rare in the field that choosing a pup for its parents drive isn't really possible. She's definitely smart but choosy about when and what she retrieves. She's also a sweetheart with a lovely temperament. More Riley and Crumpy adventures to follow I hope as we're joining a small training class of 5 retrievers all around the same standard as the general classes were getting a bit big
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! I see. Riley is a toy boy... Just warn him that he's being used for her pure entertainment, won't you? However the small classes sound brilliant! ;D Clare
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! There's no talking to him Clare - he's smitten! I will just have to be there to hold his paw when she throws him over for a younger model....
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! Well it had to happen sooner or later ;D I hope she doesn't break his heart xx
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! Charlie says "what? Riley's got a girlfriend? Ewwwww. Girls suck. Apart from that Lady, and that Poppy. Don't suppose he'll wants to come out to play anymore". I've told him that Riley will still be his friend, and one day he too will want a girlfriend. He said "yuk, yuk, no way". ;D ;D ;D
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! my daughter fell in love with curly coated retrievers at crufts last year. desperately wants one. they are beautiful looking dogs but have never seen one out and about.
She's absolutely lovely, big though! Long legs, very tall. She has a great nature, reasonably chilled for a three year old, very friendly. If they're all like Crumpy I wouldn't hesitate to have one as a pet. I wouldn't get one as a working dog though unless I fancied a challenge (next challenge after Rachael Pippa?!? )
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! My friend has one, just about 8 months old We went to see her when she was just a three week old pup; she seems a very nice dog and so far is very interested in retrieving.

Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! I might take my camera next week and see if I can get a reasonable picture of two very black dogs Any tips Heidrun??
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! Friend is in Worcestershire and got the Curlycoat from just in Wales.
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! Ah we're in Hampshire so that's probably a bit far. I think Jean would probably love to meet someone training a Curly to retrieve.
That's something I haven't cracked yet. My friends have two beautiful black labs, I will practise on them soon. Here is an interesting article, Barbara. It also throws up another possible reason why black dogs are so difficult to re home by rescue shelters. Never thought about that before! http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-avoid-problems-photographing-black-dogs.html
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! Thanks I'm trying to persuade the ex-policeman round the corner to take some photos of Riley, he takes some great shots of his Belgian Shepherd who's brindled (and stunning). I shall experiment and see how I get on!
Re: Riley is in love.....and she's not a lab! We had a chessie take part in the first obedience exams with us back last June. She was lovely, name of Ida The thought of Riley in love is very sweet! And Charlie will find love one day too, just you wait Julie. Do hope your nose isn't too put out of joint when he suddenly prefers the company of some winning little minx to you… Isn't it lovely the way they have definite affection for certain other dogs? Poppy so far has lots of friends, but mostly girl dogs. She tends to get very annoyed with boy dogs if they become too attentive!
