I meant to add that I'm glad you got the pic up and that Otis is a cutie Sounds like you have many happy times ahead hiking together when he is old enough I don't know how likely it is that rear dew claws will actually get caught and rip off....I think that is pretty unlikely. As we know dogs have front dew claws and I have never heard of a dog damaging these. Damaging the rear ones is equally unlikely, I would say. So it's not something I'd worry about, personally. A dog could catch one of the 'normal' toes on anything too, and yet we don't worry about that.
Thank you so much everyone for your kind words and the warm welcoming! I am looking forward to becoming more proactive with this forum, learning all that I can, and helping those in need. Yeah, I've been debating the pros and cons of getting them removed, and I think as long as he doesn't get too boisterous out and about we should be okay We are getting ready to start "Splash Dog" training and I am very excited to see him excel in that.
What is 'Splash Dog' training? Is that like Dock Dogs, where they jump off a platform into water? That would be awesome fun!!
Yes Rachael, we call the group Splash Dogs where I am located, but same concept He is very toy driven and LOOOOVES the water so I thought it would be a great way for him to have some fun
Hello and welcome. You have a very happy looking dog there! I don't know much about dew claws, but I did read that the Great Pyrenees breed is actually required by its breed standards to have a double rear dew claw, because it gives it extra stability and traction when working in rough and hilly terrain, so they may actually be a benefit to your pup when you get out in those mountains!
Hi there Snowbunny and thank you He and my son (pictured below) are the Kings of the Castle and best friends. IMG_5227 by Nicolette McAllister, on Flickr
Aw, they are obviously great friends Splash Dogs sounds excellent - would love to see pics once you start!
You lovely pics of your cute cute boy really made me smile and laugh, that hard when I just got into work. he's lovely have fun
Oh bless him , he does have quite a lot of spare skin around his head area, but then so did my lad when he was very young . The skull is very slow to grow, in fact its the last boney area to develop , most pups end up growing into their skin as the mature , his ears look fine to me by the way , they will hang naturally as he develops .
Loving your pictures. That's me educated on rear dew claws now! where abouts are you based? Lovely that he can get up onto the mountains
Oh, he is just BEAUTIFUL! Love his face and smile. (Pongo had lots of wrinkles when he was very young too.... but now he has the classic broad labrador face.) Welcome!
No wonder they are both on their backs looking happy. Anyone else notice the beer bottle on the shelf over the bed.
