I had my beautiful Douglas PTS yesterday. He had became ill at around 3.30 and had a what I though could been a TIA, I was aware something changed in him. Midge(his life long friend) was upset and worried. He then went on to have a large stroke latter in the day(around 1pm). At 2.30 my vet came quickly, we talked, I phoned some medic friends and consulted with my husband(as balance and brain specialist), then we talked as dougies friends. We agreed it was unfair for our precious dog to continue living. I had already made my desicion when he had seen me after having the large stroke. He wagged his tail and looked at me and said " help me please".

He still recognised me and I lay with him until the vet arrived, trying to keep him calm. He was so frightened and all I could do was be with him.

I held him in my arms as we PTS. He went peacefully.

He was a very fine dog, wonderful, I was lucky to have had him in my life and although I'm sad in a strange way I feel happy and at peace because I didn't fail him when he needed me the most. He went through so much and always wanted to do more, his body failed but his mind was still wickedly charming and even as an old boy he could be devilish. I will always miss him and his sense of humor kindness and loyalty. We did so many things together and went to so many places and where ever he went he was loved.

Douglas 13/01/02 to 29/03/16 a life well lived

Beautiful words. He was a fine boy indeed and will leave a big hole in your life. I know you'll remember him with joy and laughter. He must have felt so loved, right to the end.

    Sleep well, sweet boy.

I'm very sorry to hear that Douglas has gone. It's so upsetting when we lose our dear old friends, though it sounds as if you have good memories to treasure.

What a wonderful tribute you have written about your wonderful Douglas, it made me cry, as you summed up my own feelings and thoughts when I've had to make the same decision. So many emotions to go through. The kindest loving and often most difficult is letting them go. Your Douglas is at peace and you had the greatest honour of being with him when he passed with dignity, respect and love. Bless you and your precious boy, who lived a life well lived. X

    A DOG’S PRAYER

If it should be that I grow weak

And pain should keep me from my sleep

Then you must do what must be done

For this last battle cannot be won

You will be sad, I understand

Don’t let your grief then stay your hand

For this day more than all the rest

Your love for me must stand the test

We have had so many happy years

What is to come can hold no tears

You would not want me to suffer so

The time has come, please let me go

Take me where my need they’ll tend

And please stay with me till the end

Hold me firm and speak to me

Until my eyes no longer see

I know in time that you will see

The kindness that you did for me

Although my tail its last has waved

From pain and suffering, I’ve been saved

Please do not grieve, it must be you

Who has this painful thing to do.

We’ve been so close, we two, these years,

Don’t let your heart hold back its tears
