Hello, we have a 9 week old puppy, Harry, and next week I’ll need to drive my daughter 45 minutes to school, and then drive home. We have to bring Harry with us and are getting him used to the car but I’m worried about how to let him have a toilet break before his vaccinations are complete. I don’t think he’ll manage an hour and a half without one …. Any advice very much appreciated.
At 9 weeks I had to drive my puppy to Southampton; a 7 hour trip. He woke up after 5 hours and I found a field gateway to pop into. I wouldn't be concerned about 1.5 hours needing a stop.
I had a very long drive bringing Sophie home from the breeder, and also I used to take her in the car in a crate with me where she often needed to pee. I tried to find areas that I knew people would not bring dogs to (like office complexes, day care centers, doctor or dentist offices, grocery stores, etc) and i would take her to the far back of that grassy space since most people walk their dogs near sidewalks or roads. You can never be 100% sure but if you can take to places where chances of dog walks are much smaller, I think that's best strategy. It's difficult! I can tell you that at 10 weeks, Sophie contracted Giardia just from ONE potty session at the pet store when I took her for puppy classes. I watched her like a hawk and it was the ONLY place she went to outside of my yard at that age. She had meds and had a complete recovery and I was so worried and freaked out because she was so young. I think a lot of websites freak us out with worry but try not to stress. Sophie is now 5.5 months, has had all vaccinations, but yet still got giardia 2 times, and kennel cough on her first week at daycare and has come out okay from it all. But at the time I was super stressed. As long as you can afford vet visits if he does get sick, don't let all the stuff on line freak you out and stress you out.
Thanks Annamarie, yes, there’s s Thanks Annamarie, your reassurance is very helpful. I’m glad Sophie’s doing well and I will get a good pet insurance!
When I roadtripped with my guy as a pup, I would use puppy pads in the bed of my pickup for him to potty on, and let him run around for a few minutes back there. Kodi nox
