We have a 14 week old Chocolate Lab that we are beginning to train. Should we use the same food for treats during obedience training as our pup eats?
Hi Christopher, welcome to the forum! Yes, using your puppy's dinner ration during training is a great idea I usually have some higher value treats as well, for when I'm trying to capture a new behavior for the first time, or proof an existing one around a new distraction. Temporarily using higher value treats is a great way to keep dogs motivated whenever you make training harder!
Sarah. Thanks for the welcome message and your reply to my thread. I am using my puppy's normal food. I was using a special treat I bought and then my puppy had diarrhea, of which he still has. We are using the same food that our breeder uses, but during our dogs transpor,t because of the transport company's new protocols they were not allowing customers to provide their own food. So our puppy was given rations that, I think, and our vet thinks, may have contributed to the issue. Our puppy, Titus, just had his wellness check today, so we will find out tomorrow the results of his stool sample. But until then, I think I am going to cut the treats out and see what happens. But when we go back, I will heed your advice, but look for a different off-the-shelf treat for Titus!!!
