    boooo how disappointing !

how mashed was mashed? I'd be looking for the consistency of a chicken liver pate.....no idea how to spell it but my mother used a moule and I blend it to within and inch of its life....

It was very mashed, but quite dry. I used sardines in brine but a tablespoon of oil made no difference. Think it would be better in a blender, maybe? Thinking I still need more liquid somehow...

What happens to the sardines if you whizz it in a blender ? Like Barbara says you might need more of a paste consistency a blender might make it more paste like. What about mixing a bit of cream cheese to bind it ?

While shopping for cream cheese have a look for Princes sardine spread. Maybe that would work to bind it or decant the sardine spread into pouch and see if it will squeeze. ;D

Just think of the marketing potential once you have a working model. This time next year you could be a millionaire slightly better off than you are now. ;) (I'm thinking it might be quite a niche market!)

Julie, hope it works. What about breadcrumbs, there again that would probably make it too dry. Egg would make it too slimy, fingers crossed cream cheese works.

    Hmm...egg isn't a bad idea - works for mayo...

I know I could buy a fish paste, but I need so much training food - and Charlie gets so little food - whatever i use has to be ok to form part of his diet so I'm not so keen on a commercial human product if i can avoid it. Sardines fit the bill...

Yeah I think you need something the consistency of pate... Perhaps a blender would be a better option as you could really mash it up even better.

When I make low fat mackerel pate I use a tablespoon of low fat yoghurt and whizz it in the food processor. Its isn't quite as soft as a mousse, but is still fairly soft and might work. Fits the healthy criteria at least and I think wouldn't "squeeze out" in the same way as a watery mixer.

Sorry Barbara! Reading back I see you already suggested the yoghurt. :-[

I buy the mackerel from Lidl and just add a squeeze of lemon along with the yoghurt. I make it for myself but it always disappears cos everyone else decides they fancy it. I love it with toast ;D
Not sure I have ever offered it to Lilly but she gets any mackerel trimmings :)

I have got yoghurt now - will try it. It's definitely a squeeze challenge though....the original mixture looked fine...but no.

    I'll have another go tomorrow.

no, no I didn't mean it like that :D

I didn't even realise why I'd suggested yoghurt and your post reminded me! And made me think of lunch (I am ruled by my stomach to a large degree) It's not like I'm some culinary genius

This post, among others, makes me feel grateful that Penny values ANY treat as high reward... Although to be fair chicken is her all time ultimate favourite. She's anyone's for a bit of roast chicken...

It is so interesting that you say that - I have just found out something about Charlie and high value treats! Am just going to post on the training thread...

Late to this thread. The Moule is in fact the Mouli. It is a hand cranked item for pureeing baby food. You can get them for about £19 from Amazon.

Sometimes if you put stuff through a food processor the speed at which it works disrupts the structure of the food. My family have never let me forget the time I tried to mash potatoes on the food processor - it came out like wallpaper paste!

Over a quarter of a century later and they are still going on about it ;)

    Good point! ;D ;D ;D

I once put potatoes in the magimix! Threw them away before they were spotted!

I have a retro, thick glass tall blender, that looks fab but is terrible to clean (I need a new bowl for my magimix). I couldn't face the cleaning today....I'll have a go tomorrow before his training lesson.
