I watched a Youtube clip the other day about gun dog owners in the US that rabbit scent dummies and leave 4 or 5 randomly in a field, let their Pointers go and they point where they are. Is this something any of you practice or should I stick to the 'snake'? Hey that would make a great Youtube clip, Charlie pointing the 'snake' ;D Helen x

videos of perfect dogs....hmmmm..... that counts us out then :). brodick loves to find things but sometimes 'forgets' the retrieve bit, delivering to hand ? ( wow Jasper) is but a dream, and if anything furry or feathery and alive appeared while i was trying to video him you would just see a video of his rear end disappearing into the far distance and the dummy abandoned without a backward glance. cuillin might manage to behave and she does look lovely doing her thing but depends on whether she fancied starting a game with the dummy with brodick mid retrieve ( a particular favourite of hers) we are far too ramshackle and embarrasingly novice to post videos alongside the Real Gundoggery that goes on here but we could post some comedy ones. I'll try and video the first time Brodick sees the duck winged dummy. that should be a laugh :) if only I knew how to do it Im technically challenged too!

I can try to post a video of Charlie running round and killing the dummy in front of a slightly shocked gun dog trainer? I'll try get one next week. We're definitely top of the class at dummy killing - just the best. Any dangerous dummies, and Charlie's your dog...

Well done Jasper, good boy, look forward to more vids, Lynne.

    *one of these days*
I really do wish I could get a decent bit of time to work on all we need to do training wise.
I love seeing all these video successes though - keep them going!

If I worked 24/7 with Charlie he would never do that and I'm not sure I could launch 'snake' that far either ;DBrilliant well done Barbara and the lovely Riley. Helen x

    Re: Scenting Dummies

Thanks Helen, we have sooo much to work on but it's nice to enjoy the good moments.
And I don't know.....snake may have charmed Charlie enough ;D

These were memory retrieves so Riley was right next to me when I just tossed the dummy a little way. This meant he saw exactly where it landed. Then he would walk to heel with me away from the dummy and when we got far enough away I would send him back for the dummy. So no throwing skills required!!

When we first started doing memories I would run (jog!) away from the dummy and then spin Riley round and send him straight away to keep the tempo and enthusiasm up. No sitting, waiting or steadiness at that point :)

I think I've mentioned before my surprise and pleasure when Riley did a memory retrieve over a little stream, round a couple of corners in a wood. I never thought he'd do it but off he went, it was all built in and nothing to do with me or training. I reckon if Charlie really wants that snake he'd remember where it was and go and get it ;D

I was watching your video Barbara before I went out and when you said Back...Dexter ran over to me with a little gruff and sat by my feet......I wonder if he remembers hearing that when he was little with his breeder.....oh he would have been a great gun dog,but I hope he knows he is a absolutely amazing at being our pet ;D.im going to start properly with the clicker retreive training tomorrow...I've bought a canvas dummy from the pet shop ,it's something I can do while he's still taking it easy, his neuter op is healing wonderfully....

Thanks Lynne for your lovely compliments about Charlie, I haven't got a long enough zoom out to catch Charlie on video ;D I will leave it to the professional dog trainers and I will enjoy every one of them and hopefully learn from them. I am guessing Heidrun is on shoots as we haven't seen any videos or pictures of late :( Helen x
