Re: Scenting Dummies Aahhhhhh thanks Lynne He's currently crashed out after his slightly overwhelming day but I'll tell him you said so!
Re: Scenting Dummies
heidrum as hurt her back, hope she is well soon xxx
Thanks Lynne, my back is getting better! x Angela, you can use whatever you like for your clicker retrieve training. It does not have to be a canvas dummy. In fact while he is still learning about the clicker it might be a lot easier to use something he really loves to carry. Barbara, lovely video clips. Try and get hold of a child's cap gun and fire it just before you give your back command. That would be the first little step to getting him used to gun shot.
Re: Scenting Dummies I have just bought one for my iphone, and a clamp holding thingy for my iPad, so I can put it on a tripod. I am writing a series on directional control and I thought I was being clever and would be able to film three camera angles of a retrieve for example, without having to run it three times and move my camera each time. My son tells me this will look really weird as the film quality will be so different between the three devices, but I am going to give it a go anyway! I have tried hand-holding and am really bad at it. The resulting film is a disaster - the only thing it is good for is making people feel sick. If it stops raining I am going to film some stop whistle practice exercises this pm, so I will try splicing the different films and you can all tell me if it looks weird. Love watching Riley and you obviously have a steady hand!
Re: Scenting Dummies The quality will be different but as long as you don't chop and change the view in the final film too often I wouldn't have thought it would affect the overall impact Looking forward to it!
Re: Scenting Dummies Heidrun are you back in action? pardon the pun, there's nothing funny about a sore back Dexter doesn't LOVE to carry anything ....he's most consistent at returning his rabbit skin ball though and I have a rabbit skin dummy but he hasn't been introduced that yet ,it was something I thought I could produce if I was struggling.....Er guess I am if I can't get out the starting gate, : but I also thought it might be too exciting for him?ill give it a go,were not doing it to win any prizes, just to give him something to think about, and I know you know this so thanks for giving me a tip ,keep taking it easy and hope you are out in the field very soon ,does someone else work your dogs for you if you aren't able? X
Re: Scenting Dummies Angela be careful how you introduce the rabbit dummy After many weeks of Charlie retrieving sparingly the rabbit ball I introduced the rabbit dummy and he 'killed it stone dead' and it took me ages to get it off him. Pippa suggests clicker training a pick up and release. It is obviously a very exciting thing Good luck. Helen xx
Re: Scenting Dummies I think that "too exciting" thing may apply to us. We have had it out in the house a few times and she is not keen on giving it back. Had an inkling there may be a "kill-factor" too if we take our eye of the ball. Really not had a chance to use it for retrieve and we need to work on the leave/delivery first.
Re: Scenting Dummies
I'm confused, why leave/delivery first Jac? Helen x
A bit tongue in cheek Helen. She sooo wanted not to give it back and to "worry" it. I think if I threw it in the garden I may never get it back in one piece. Since her "leave it" only works if its something she isn't overly bothered about :
Re: Scenting Dummies LOL Remember that I must be one of the least gun-doggery types on here - Lilly and the retrieve is virtually non existent ;D ;D Still......all these gundog tips must help out with general obedience and training somewhere along the line!
Re: Scenting Dummies I think you and I both re: gun-doggery !! Huge sympathy with the non existent retrieve although 'snake' is helping Helen x
Re: Scenting Dummies Ok, I took a couple of videos of Obi doing retrieves with his new Avery dummy in the backyard. He has started up a bit of chomping with this slightly squashy dummy, unfortunately. My throwing skills are rubbish (I manage to hit the chook house in this vid, though that was better than the first one where the dummy got stuck in a tree). Also, Obi doesn't respond well to his release cue ('go free') because he is hoping for more treats for staying put : ;D Hope this works...technical skills not a forte.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/93962102@N05/10326182845/
Re: Scenting Dummies Thanks Rachael I find everyones little videos so useful as an incompetent novice : Well done Obi x Charlie says thanks too as he was watching it with me much FOCUS and said "I can do that" NOT ;D Helen xx
Re: Scenting Dummies Rachael I've had a miserable morning and this has cheered me up.....lovely to see Obi in action, and what action, perfect with his dummy...but the thud when the dummy hits the chook house made me chuckle and chuckle.....just needed a comedy squawk!throw harder next time! ;D ;D ;D
Re: Scenting Dummies Haha, definitely chicken sound effects required ;D They certainly didn't look impressed. Helen, you are so NOT a novice.
Re: Scenting Dummies Oh yes I am ;D Angela why have you had a miserable morning, if you don't mind me asking? Hope you are OK. Helen xx
Re: Scenting Dummies Love it, he is super neat! Straight out and back, everything on command. I dream of accuracy like that (Obi not the throwing!)
