Ok, I took a couple of videos of Obi doing retrieves with his new Avery dummy in the backyard. He has started up a bit of chomping with this slightly squashy dummy, unfortunately. My throwing skills are rubbish (I manage to hit the chook house in this vid, though that was better than the first one where the dummy got stuck in a tree). Also, Obi doesn't respond well to his release cue ('go free') because he is hoping for more treats for staying put ::) ;D Hope this works...technical skills not a forte....

I am going to tie Charlie down and make him watch it...over and over and over!

    Good boy Obi!

    Tail woes...... :(

Unless water is involved Obi is not a crazy-keen retriever (which you can tell as he's not in too much of a hurry) and that makes it easier for me, compared to a dog like Choc Charlie who loves his dummy and wants it for himself right now. When we got Obi he'd been allowed to fetch and fetch till he lost interest, so we've had to build up enthusiasm, not control/tone it down.

The other thing I need to do is the sit on left hand side on command - Obi is pretty smart there (jealous :(). I use "walk" and stupidly have not associated it with sitting, just walking ::). Still, I don't suppose that will take long. Only I've got so much on my list this month! (Wail...moan...sorry - I'll go get on with something productive).

No, it won't take long to teach that. Just use one cue for 'come to my left side from wherever you are and sit'. Use a different cue other than 'sit'. Basically, don't use a sit cue. Teach it from scratch using a separate cue. Or just do whatever WGT2 said to do :)

    Thanks! I'll start that tonight.

WGT2 said "sort that out for next time". I have strictly an hour (she has students waiting either side of my slot). So I don't get detailed instructions unless it's really important (and sometimes even then, I get a demo and I need to remember and work it out). I'm not complaining, she is really, really great, but expects a high level of initiative from me (and I suspect secretly would rather spend time with the dogs.. ;D ;D ;D).

So I use "finish" with a hand gesture of my left hand, open palmed moved down to my side (palm to the front) and that basically tells Riley to come round and sit at my side. I know some people use "close" as a command word.

I use this particularly after he's delivered a dummy to set him up for the next retrieve but I'll also use it if I want him sat in the heel position rather than facing me as he would be from a recall :)

To teach him I basically lured him round with a treat and then turned that into my hand gesture.

I lured Charlie to my left with treats but he automatically 'sits' and always heels off lead, stops on my left, follows me on the left but I still use 'sit' as my command in he lapses. If I tries to walk on my right I say "other side" and hand signal and he switches to the left. Probably all incorrect but it works for us. Helen x
