Two ways - if you have a post they've made, click on their avatar (profile pic) and you'll get a little pop-up appearing. This has a link "Start a conversation". Or if you click on the Inbox link at the top right of the screen, there's also a "Start a New Conversation" option there, and then you type in the user's name into the "to" box.
