Just last month my 2.5 year old male lab was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis in both elbows as a result of elbow dysplasia. Lots of bone growth has already limited his range of motion. Adaquan shots twice a week, although those are for the hip dysplasia that he also has - that was diagnosed one week after the elbows. Daily dose is Dasaquin as well. Trying to get him out swimming as that is best for him. We have an appointment tomorrow with the specialist to see what, if anything can be done since he is so young.
Question - anyone here used surgery on elbows? Was it successful? Looking for any assistance for our guy but the xrays aren't good at all. The vet said they look like elbows in a 12 year old dog.

Just last month, my not quite 3 year old male, was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis in both elbows as a result of elbow dysplasia. There is some serious bone growth that has impacted his range of motion. We had no idea there was any problem. One week later he was limping on the back right and back to the vet for a hip dysplasia diagnosis. He is currently getting two Adaquan shots / week to help with his hips but the vet does not think the Adaquan will help at all with the elbows. She suggested a visit to a specialist to see what they would recommend for him since he is so young.
My question is this - has anyone had elbow surgery done to help with this condition? What were the results? Anything else other than surgery that we could look into to help him?

Looking for any suggestions - thank you!

Hi Labsrfun and welcome to the forum :) I merged your two threads about your doggie's health issue.

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with this condition in such a young dog. It's good that you're seeing a specialist soon - definitely the way to go. I'm not sure of the circumstances under which surgery is used for arthritis - I think it's done if there's debris (bits of cartilage or bone chips) inside the joint. It's also done on hips in the form of a hip joint replacement. Your dog is young, and so that may be an option (hip replacement).

Hope you are able to discuss all the options with the specialist. Let us know how it goes.
