I've taught Poppy to shake on command!! Brilliant! VERY USEFUL in this weather (shake OUTSIDE the front door - good girl - treat ) Wonder what else I can teach her while we are confined to short lead walks? Heel work is noticeably improving, too..
Re: Shake! Brilliant Karen, how did you train it, that's very useful? Perhaps you could train the 'bell ring' to go outside
Re: Shake! I just kept saying "shake" when she was shaking, and then praising her, and eventually she caught on! OH says that actually I also did a sort of shimmy myself while I was telling her to shake... Apparently it was very funny, but luckily he didn't manage to film it.. So I have changed my physical cue to a waggle of my hand.
Re: Shake! Snap! Sophie has taught that one to Lilly too. She uses a "wave" signal with her hand flat and fingers spread a bit. VERY useful. Particularly when I remember to use it before getting inside ;D I do have difficulty doing it without wiggling too. And she won't do it if she isn't actually wet - not sure if she can't or won't :
Re: Shake! mark as taught jasper to shake,.....he still shakes when he gets in the kitchen,,,,black splashes all over my doors
Re: Shake! Oh I am liking the sound of this, 2 wet dogs shaking when they get inside is not pleasant : I will give it a go I think with the wiggle ;D
Re: Shake! That's great! And should help her water retrieves too if she still wants to shake as soon as she comes out...hopefully she'll starting waiting for your command
Re: Shake! I think a wiggling owner on the shake command is all part of the fun! ;D ;D ;D Embrace the wiggle!

Re: Shake! Fantastic idea. In a silly vein I've just taught The DivaDog - - three new commands .... sleep, lie still and be silent - all easy peasy as she was fast asleep curled in her bed at the time
Re: Shake!
...then doing the full body wiggle and shouting "shake! shake!"
You must, you must ;D ;D ;D. It's in a labrador's job description: stop your owner taking him/herself too seriously, and make them laugh.
Re: Shake! Couldn't agree more with that, Julie! Shake is such a useful cue.... Must put that on my to-do list!
Re: Shake! So, during the somewhat tedious twice a day ear cleaning routine, we need Charlie to shake his head (but not before we tell him), while remaining lying down. OH has been working on this. Why did I let him? : : : But it's fun. ;D ;D ;D The command for Charlie to shake his head is to shake yours side to side very quickly, with a loose mouth, making your cheeks wobble, while making a sound like an annoyed donald duck! 8) I just know Heidrun will be nicking this for shake after water retrieves.... ;D ;D ;D
