Re: Shoot Diary A thousand birds is a LOT of birds in one day and you'd only see that on a big commercial shoot. Whilst I'm totally ok with shoots being run on a commercial basis I'm not sure you need such large bags to fund them but I could well be wrong! The small syndicate shoot I went on the guns and beaters are members of the syndicate. They put money in at the beginning of the year which pays for the birds and the keepers time(he has another job too). They have a few working parties through the year and share the workload with the keeper overseeing everything. The had an average day when I was there with 5 guns and a bag of about 45 birds if I remember rightly. Much more my cup of tea and I'm trying very hard to go and see/participate in some rough shooting which I think will appeal to me even more especially now I have Obi.

Re: Shoot Diary Actually.....I am a very good shot. Pretty good record on the occasions I have been clay pigeon shooting. Get foiled by the odd clay rabbit......but somehow or other I have a natural "eye". NO idea where that came from.......

Re: Shoot Diary I was good at clay pigeon shooting but had to give it up quickly as I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears from noise damage). Don't think I could have ever killed a living creature though. It is interesting that some men as they get older they seem to want to stop killing and take up working their dogs instead

Just like fishing, sailing and flying did. Although sailing took 10 years. : I think he has visions of shooting and killing a duck (he loves duck) for supper, and sending Charlie to get it for him. Now, what's more unlikely? That he'll actually hit a duck, or Charlie would actually bring it back? Shall I confess now to the complete ineffectiveness of all the money and time (away from home, leaving OH to cope on frozen pizza) spent on gundog training? Or bank on him never actually hitting a duck? hmmmm..... ;D ;D ;D

I was talking more generally of the "industry" - by which I meant the entire operation of pheasants shoots in the UK, and the representations made by organisations such as BASC. It is extremely hard to figure out what is going on - there are many, many calls for an independent looks at things from the economic contribution claims, to the environmental benefit claims. I'll stick to a clay pigeon lesson until I finish reading I think!

Re: Shoot Diary Have to confess to taking them to a shop and having them dressed, shop no longer there unfortunately. I adore game but OH not keen, but I did cook them all and thoroughly enjoyed them.
