Ah, that sounds great. What a star he is. :) :) :)

It's not silly at all. Any training with your dog is useful in terms of getting him used to working with you, doing things together, having him focus on you - and so on. I bet it will help with all sorts of other aspects of your training too.

Ah sounds great fun for you,he did really well, funny you say about Simbas clockwise spin being easier than anti....I found the same I use 'spin' for clockwise and 'twist' for anti ....
Bow is hard....you've reminded me about it now....we could do with improving.Dexter gives a voluntary bow when I've put his harness on so I try and capture that ....I was putting my hand underneath his tummy to slow it down when we were learning to give me a chance to click his elbows bending ....otherwise he had a tendency to just flop down.....

All of this is a bit silly, I suppose, but it's giving us something to do INSIDE during the cold winter months and strengthening the relationship between us, so all good!

Not silly at all, I totally get it ,when you are stuck inside you need to have things you can do with them and things we learned over the summer help me now when we are at classes ...I remember Rachael saying she does little excercises with Obi when was she is waiting around at Flyball with him.....I did the same when we were waiting around at the reactive class.
Simba sounds top of the class ,glad you've found it x

Wow Lisa Simba is doing so well and you sound like you are really enjoying it. I think teaching tricks is fun and good bonding time. I taught Charlie to spin clock and anti clock wise, empty the washing machine, bring me my keys and the post, just need to think up some more jobs for him :D Very well done both of you xxx :)

Sounds like a great class!!! Excellent thing to do.

    Bow is really hard....

Hope they introduce 'bang...drop dead' - that's a fun one and easier than bow I reckon! :)

I don't think it's silly at all. I think it is brilliant as it is bonding time and will give you activities to occupy him and you during the cold months. Sounds like he did really well :D

Just thinking...with the bow, try to hold your luring hand in a way that is totally different to your 'down' cue. e.g. closed fist with one finger pointing to ground... You are probably already onto that, but just thought I'd mention it.

Does Simba ever just stretch in a bit position, like when he gets up from a snooze? You could say 'bow' just as he starts then mark and reward it.

Thanks, Rachel. Good idea on a different hand signal, hadn't thought of that yet but I should! I like the idea of the capture, too, I will try that (although the stretch is slightly different than the bow, but hopefully it would get him associating the position).

Workedmon spin, weave and hand touch today. Right away realized I would have to use a different hand signal for the hand touch as the flat, open palm hand in front of his face is what I use for "stay". I think I might try a closed fist for that one. The bow continues to be tricky. I think we made a little progress today, but not a lot. I probably messed it up a bit by looking at a video of someone doing shaping to teach it, so I thought I try that (after all, HER dog caught on after just a couple tries)....nope. Shaping has always been hard for Simba, things just don't seem to click. For example, the video lady said, "Mark for any movement of the head down!" So I stood there waiting for the head to go down, and Simba stood there staring at me expectantly, then did a nice sit. ::) Fiddled around a bit more with that but I just couldn't get him to pick up on it, so switched back to the luring. Bad trainer, sigh. Anyhow he made minuscule progress, will try again tomorrow.

Jac, I will video when I feel like we are getting somewhere...it's a bit boring to watch at the moment. Will have to think about videoing the weave, we look a bit ridiculous at the moment (and I can hear you thinking, "so?" with an evil glint in your eye... :))

;D I bet it didn't. The failed attempts are on the cutting room floor.

Nothing wrong with luring to get the start of a behaviour :)

That's what I keep thinking when trying to lure Shadow into a "down". Willow was tough, but he's REALLY tough! I watch these videos and every other b*stard's dogs do it "first time"! Lying gits. :D

    LOL

Riley was easy but his down has fallen into disrepair as I never use it. Obi just looks at me like I'm mad ;D

    EXACTLY!!!! I mean, seriously.....

Simba has a good down. Plus he can do a "leave it" while in the down position with a treat on his paw. Take that, smarmy know-it-all perfect dogs!! Hah!

The bow is still a work in progress. I can lure him into a position where his head is down between his paws and he is ever so slightly bowed at the elbows....can do this with him following my hand to the ground but with no treat in hand. It actually looks like a better "bow" in a sense with his head down like that, but ho hum....will keep working on this. :)

He's done a couple nice stretch bows today, of course didn't have my clicker on me, but did a happy "Yes, good dog!" and gave him a treat. He looked at me like I was crazy.....not an uncommon thing around here.... ::)

Re: Simba - Novice Trick Dog???

    Sooo...week two tonight!

We have been practicing hard this week. After a couple days of working on hand touch and not exactly getting it, I realized that having my hand out palm facing him is the signal I use for Stay. No wonder he was a bit confused.Switched to a closed fist, worked better, but still kinda hesitant. After a couple more days it dawned on me that I had spent quite a bit of time when we first got Simba teaching him NOT to contact my hand when it approached his head, to eliminate the collar reactivity issue he had. Sigh. Poor dog, no wonder he looked worried when I started to teach him it's okay to touch it! Hah. It's working better now, with the fist and the word "touch".

Take a bow is almost there! Here's a vid I took today:

    [flash=https://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=1535363810]http://width="400" height="225" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=c2e110088b&photo_id=15364428014" bgcolor="#000000" allowFullScreen="true"[/flash]

This is typical of where we are at. He doesn't usually get it with just the voice command, as I tried first, because of holding the camera. So I used my hand signal, which is two fingers touching the floor between his paws. He gets it, I think, although, okay, it looks more like a stretch than a bow....small steps....

He looks worried, doesn't he? Hopefully he's enjoying it! :-\

We can do the "weave" pretty well, sorry, couldn't video that without a helper. It's not smooth, and he's pretty focussed on my hand, but, again, we are going in the right direction.

We had "stay" and "shake paw" already, but I worked on those too...and threw in some extra practice on the "wave"...not required but just for fun...

I'll let you know what our assignments are this week! :)

I'm not sure why my flickr BB code isn't working....hmm....

    [flash=https://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=1535363810]http://width="400" height="225" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=c2e110088b&photo_id=15364428014" bgcolor="#000000" allowFullScreen="true"[/flash]

    ???

Anyhow I forgot, we worked on "spin" in both directions....again it's going okay, not really smooth or pretty but something to work on....

    The link isn't working...maybe it's because it's a video....drat, try this:

Final edit....oops I sound kinda grumpy the second time I say "bow", don't I. Oops.
