Myles is staying at vet today. She looked at same video I posted here and agreed left front leg, felt around and could not get a reaction out of him either. She did wonder if his harness might not be good for him (I don't disagree, not a fan of it either), mentioned the buckle that sits on his shoulder and if he pulls may have bothered something. So she suggested changing to different harness and then said she could go ahead and do X-rays if that would make me feel better. So I agreed. He's having to be lightly sedated for X-rays so he will stay there today and we will discuss results later. Will keep you all posted. Side note: the vet clearly has not traumatized him yet as he was jumping up happily on everyone. Ugh I look like I don't train him at all
Hoping all is well with the x-rays. Will the vet send them to an orthopaedic specialist for review as well? I only mention as my vet automatically sends x-rays for review - in Juno's case she couldn't see anything wrong but the specialist picked up a problem. Juno also didn't respond to anything when examined and manipulated, the ortho specialist describes her as "stoic" so it sounds as if Myles is the same. Juno, loves our vet and is always excited when we go, luckily enough she doesn't jump up. let us know how you get on with the x-ray results.
Back from vet and we discussed his X-rays. He showed me a couple of places of inflammation in the growth plate more in his wrist and possible inflammation in the bones in lower leg. He basically said "growing pains" and he saw nothing scary in the elbows. So gave me some anti inflammatory chews to give him when he's limping. Hoping it's just this simple. Bad day for Myles though. He got super sick right as we pulled into driveway (all over car ) I'm guessing from sedation earlier combined with car ride. He already has car anxiety so this certainly didn't help. Ugh. But relieved at what the vet said and hope this just limp thing just passes. Thanks for your support everyone! As a side note, my heart really goes out to those of you who have had to go through difficult diagnosis, surgeries and recovery with your pups. Just the worry over the weekend alone was enough to do me in. You have much to contribute in these discussions which is why I love this forum. So thank you for taking the time to share your input!
It's good to hear that there is no cause for alarm. As you say, hopefully it will pass and all will be well. Sorry that Myles was sick in the car, poor boy.
Good news on the joint front...Ugh to the throwing up in the car.... Benson had something similar when he was about 7 months old or so..odd limp in his front legs...never could be sure which one.very, very slight and the vet said it was just a mild inflammation nothing to worry about. We did of course!
That is good news! I was interested in what you said about the harness - I thought the same was possible. That harness will put pressure on his left hand side if it pulls him round towards you. I hesitated to mention it, so reinforcing my already well established reputation as hating all dog/human walking attachments other than back fastening harnesses (but, hey - now since the vet also mentioned it....). I'd try swapping to something else, for sure. Like a back fastening harness.....
Great news on the x-ray results , not so great with the sickness . From your discussion with the vet it sounds as if it's panosteitis which is a condition characterised by "growing pains". Sounds sad but it's one of the conditions I researched when it was confirmed Juno had an elbow problem and one I discussed (very briefly) with my ortho vet. Hopefully the anti inflammatories will make Myles feel better soon. Did the vet discuss exercise while he's limping and taking the anti inflammatory? It's strange but Juno didn't react well to the mild sedation for x-rays - she cried and whimpered for hours - but general anaesthetic has no after effects..... So pleased for you that it's not ED in any shape or form
Thanks everyone! MaccieD you know I forgot to ask that question about what he can and can't do right now. I had talked to the first vet on the phone, she was the one that did his X-rays and called me to tell me her findings but she basically said she saw nothing on the X-rays so told me to rest him for a week. It was really the other vet (head of the practice) that went over over his X-rays with me and saw the panosteitis. But I forgot to ask him what I should do. They will call today and check on Myles so I will ask then. Julie I've read all about your front fastening harness hatred and makes sense! I've been on the fence about switching for awhile now but after this I think it's time to just make the change. But oh how this harness helps with the pulling so I think we will have to do some new no-pull training on a new one. This is the one I am looking at: http://www.petfooddirect.com/produc...001b2166c2c0&gclid=CNbu9ZnDgsYCFZAAaQodcRcA8w
That Y shaped back fastening harness looks good - check that there is a clearance of the back of the front legs though. I normally look for a straight section at the back of the Y to bring the girth further down the dog's back to make sure the armpits are clear. Otherwise you can get rubbing and pinching.
This link has a picture on a dog, looks ok? http://www.eurodogdesigns.com/Hurtta-Padded-Y-harness--Black_p_111.html
When Juno first limped we went on restricted exercise of one walk of not more than 15 minutes until the limp and course of anti inflammatories was gone. I read somewhere that a dog with pano should be rested until 24 or 48 hours after limp has cleared before exercise. I 'll have a look and see f I can find the article again.
I cant find the reference to rest but this article is helpful http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/musculoskeletal/c_multi_panosteitis?page=show#
So glad Myles hasn't got ED, I know how upset you must have felt when you noticed a limp. I have felt so incredibly sad when Mabel was diagnosed with ED. Until my girl arrived I never worried about anything but I'm possibly also a contender for No1 neurotic owner xx
No, I don't think so. From the video, I would be worried about it being too close to the dog's front legs - but it's hard to tell..
Pilatelover, oh I'm do sorry to hear about Mabel's ED. I think neurotic owner is well earned after such a thing. Hope she's doing well. JulieT, hard to find what you're describing! Will keep looking.
Turig Rugaas shows in this video the section you should look for at the back of the Y to move the girth back down the dog. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPuf_nhUmE0 At 2 minutes in. The clear run fleece harnesses have this, sold under different brands (cosy dog is almost identical) and perfect fit has this feature too. I'm sure there are others. http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm/product/3929/the-original-fleece-lined-dog-harnesssolid-colors.htm You can see on the fleece harness there is an extra "cross" behind the end of the V shape that moves the girth down the dog's back. This is Charlie in a cosy dog, it has a similar "cross" shifting the attachment and girth fastening to be a good few inches clear of the back of his front legs. Without this, the girth would fastening much further forward and risk pinching his armpits. image by julieandcharlie julieandcharlie, on Flickr
She is doing well, thank you no limp at the moment due to the anti inflammatory medication. We have had a couple of fun filled days with loads of playing and new experiences so today is a quiet day. I'm really lucky where I live because if my timing is right she can have a sniff and play along the grass and brook with no other dogs insight. She has a check up at the end of the month which will be four weeks after she was diagnosed, my vet did say exercise her as normal, then I got really worried after I read so much information on the Internet but I'm participating in some Labrador research for Liverpool University when I added her exercise I could see from the data how I'd modified her exercise when her limp appeared. So without actually realising I had done what the articles had suggested just by following my gut instinct. At the moment she is curled up fast asleep half on my lap as she doesn't fit on anymore. Not that she's spoilt or anything
