I have two yellow lab puppies who just turned 11 months old, and they just devour their food in seconds and then go to each other's bowl to see if there's anything left. I don't think they're even chewing their food, this can't be healthy. Ant suggestions would be appreciated.
You can buy bowls that slow them down. They have nobly bits or patterns in that the dogs have to eat round. Or you can scatter their feed on a tray or on the grass so they have to snuffle it out
I scatter feed my youngest as he had real stomach problems when he was younger it defiately helped. just do it in seperate rooms as they maybe eating faster to nick each others food or think they will get it stolen. It really helped to slow him down
Luna is the same. At the moment I give her her meals in a tornado puzzle to slow her down, but our local pet shop has ordered some slow feeder bowls in this week so I am going to nip and get one.
You could put their food in a treat dispenser, on a flat tray or simply scatter on the floor or best of all use it for training instead x
I use a Kong Wobbler (more to keep my pup occupied than to slow him down, but it would serve that purpose too). It's a great invention
Kong Wobblers are great! I haven't used a slow-feeder, but did scatter food on a tray. Adding water to the kibble also helps slow down the inhaling of the kibble
Dogs don't really chew their food. They break it up into pieces small enough to swallow and kibble is already small enough to swallow. Don't worry about that.
Gunnar was doing the same thing! I couldn't believe that within 10 seconds he was done. We bought him the slow feeder bowl, and this has been a blessing. It now takes between 3-6 minutes for him to eat and he seems more satisfied now. One happy momma here
Some people don't put food in bowls, but use it for training throughout the day. "Hand feeding" Really helps to build a bond with you and your pups. Not sure how it would work with two. Just popped into my head. Also using a bigger bowl and adding water can slow them down
Rory ate or destroyed any slow feeder we got, scatter feeding was the only way to go in the end. He ate plastic bowls metal bowls torndos puzzle feeders Khong wobblers and anything inbetween
Thank you all for your advice. One "trick" I tries was putting a smaller bowl inside their bowl, not only did this slow them down, but now they circle the bowl trying to get their food out....really too funny!
Annie has one of these and they do work. She is still quick so I feed Fred in the shack (**radio room) so he can eat in peace. When she has finished she goes and sits out side the shack door and waits for me to open the door to let Fred out, then she runs in to see if he has left any **HO is a Radio Ham
We are using a "slow eating bowl" and eating time is much longer now, from about 40 seconds to more than 3 minutes. Before we bought this one, I used to big rocks in her bowl, it worked as well.
