Well I took Charlies' snake away 2 days ago and tonight he slithered out to play - 'lets retrieve', to say Charlie was eager is an understatement . We did 1 minute of hidden retrieves in various downstairs rooms in the house and some quite difficult to find. He was nose to the deck, tail wagging hunting that snake, when he found it he came straight back to me dropped it and got a treat :). We did some where he did a sit/wait whilst I went away and hid it and he only crept it to sneak a peek twice ::) I did wonder afterwards if this was quite the right thing to do as I don't want to put him off ? He had a lot of fun and then snake was put away for another day.

Please feel free to use my very unique training method of retrieving ;D

    Helen xx

Well done Charlie. It sounds like you both enjoyed it; I'll have to try with Bess and her favourite owl toy.

I think it is more exciting for a dog if he has to sit and wait while you go and hide something, then he is released to find it. Not really like steadiness when you have a dog beside you and stop him from running in if he is a reluctant retriever. My dogs love this game.

Stacia, great so I didn't do the wrong thing as that is not steadiness, Charlie got really excited when I returned and told him to 'Go find snake' ;D

Alice, Owl sounds great too, give it a go, as Barbara said at Crufts this year a gun dog trainer uses toys rather than dummies for retrieving as it takes the stress away from the dog.

Remember to proceed slowly, Helen. The jump from house to paddock might be too soon to much. :)

Oh so I'm not so crazy now, you all want in on the action, you heard there's a new trainer in town ;D. No it does not have to be Orange Julie, they had a rather bright Green. Now I know you are kitting yourself out in sludge green shades so this will go in your training bag along with rabbit balls, dummies etc. very nicely. You too can look as professional as I do ;D ;D

    Helen xx ;)

Re: 'SNAKE' retrieving - Part 1

Just a little update on 'snake' retrieving. Every other day we do retrieving the snake and last night Charlie delivered it several times into my hand :) so there is hope ::) Also he is still great at waiting whilst I go and hide snake and he goes and finds it and brings it back to me very excitedly :)

Yes Heidrun and Karen, we are still indoors - I am being patient

    That is so sweet!!!

Dont know what Heidrun thinks, but I would try it outside for a retrieve or two in the garden. Of course, Snake might get a bit mucky... But Charlie wont care! :)
