my new puppy arrives on 7th Jan aged 8 weeks, I have been avidly reading the Puppy Hand Book and have all my socialising trips planned from week one carrying Lucy everywhere. My question is what do I do about toileting while carrying her? I have yet to find any suggestions. Any tips please other than a puppy pad in the bottom of a carry sling? Thanks. Kingsley.
Hi Kingsley and welcome to the forum. Your socialisation trips shouldn't be very long, so she shouldn't need to toilet while you're out. With my nine-week-old, I've done a quick trip to Tesco, a quick trip to our local ambulance station, a trip to Pets At Home... all well under an hour so she didn't need to go. I just make sure she's empty before we leave and take he straight outside again when we get back.
I go in puplic loos and put a puppy pad down lol! But, like snowbunny says, your trips out don't need to be long - just frequent, at least twice a day ...
Hi there There is no need to carry them everywhere - that would be completely overwhelming for a tiny baby pup that mainly needs to sleep. A few short trips out a day is fine. I suppose if you live somewhere very quiet and are having to drive a while to places it might be different.
Many thanks for the tips, I only intend for regular short trips out, not all day, usually about an hour or so each time and only once a day to start with building up slowly. I'll let the forum know how it goes. She will be my first puppy only having had older rescue dogs previously so this new section of dog life is unknown to me.
An hour really isn't necessary. I've just taken my pup for a stroll around down the road to quiet her. Stopped outside a shop for a sit-down, because she's a complete chunk and my arms were tired! Saw a man carrying skis and ski boots, a man on a bicycle with a fishing rod, a little white dog being walked on a lead who pulled and jumped up towards us, and lots of different sized vehicles moving fast and close. Back inside within ten minutes. That was plenty of new things to see for one trip and, after a very successful use of her new toilet pen, she's now settled down with a kong
Yep, completely agree with that. I don't think I did more than about 15 minutes with Betsy - and even then all I did was walk to a park bench and let the world come to us.
